Re: a coupal questions
1. yes, a 20 gallon will work for a 3 footer
2. no, but get a t-stat or atleast a dimer for it
3. look at 2.
4. yes, but dont get any 'kits' they usually have a whole bunch of junk in it that you dont need. all you need is 2 hides that will fit snug, a water bowl, and a heat source (the heat mat) they might not have dimmers or t-stats but you can get dimmers at Lowes. you wont need to buy any substrate because you can just use newspaper.

Re: a coupal questions
1. A 20 gallon might work, but I would suggest something a little bit larger.
2. Yes, the heat mat should come with some little feet to put on the corners of the tank. I think it is a good idea to get some air flow to that heat mat.
3. Yes, at a minumum, get a dimmer switch. Lowes sells a plug in lamp dimmer made by Lutron that can be purchased for $10. It is a cheap price to pay for piece of mind.
4. They will probably have most of what you need, except for the dimmer or t-stat. See above for dimmer purchase.

Re: a coupal questions
I've got one on a corn snake tank that I've got in my living room, and for the price, you can't beat it.
