    what would u do

earlier this week i decided to put money down on a normal female from markus jayne here in canada. then the past 2 days i have been wondering if i should get 2 normal females. now today i was thinking about possibly spending some extra money and getting 1 pair of 100% het albino's. I have thought long and hard and have done as much research as i have had time to do on breeding. Its something i want to do, i just dont know if i should start of with a couple normals or save myself sometime and get a pair of 100% Hets to breed in 3 yrs. what would u do?

    Re: what would u do

That sounds like a decision you'll have to make on your own. Personally, I started out my BP collection with a 100% het caramel female! I did this because I had the money to do so at the time....and I have very clear, concise goals for my (and her!) future.

It does make me a bit nervous sometimes, this being my first BP to keep...and dreading doing something wrong that would cause me to lose her because we spent a LOT of money on her. HOWever....I've grown to love that girl like crazy (from the moment I selected her out of Adam's collection!), and I believe I would have done the same even if I'd started with a normal, so the anxiety about losing her would be no different because it becomes about truly caring for the snake, rather than how much money I spent. But there's no getting around the fact that the money adds a flavor of anxiety that would not have been there before.

So if you think you'd be more comfortable and/or your plans for the future are not crystal clear...maybe choose the normal girls and get yourself completely comfortable with their care and quirks....and save the het-albino money for next time. But if you're confident in your ability to care for them...and are quite sure what you want your future with snakes to be....go for it!

    Re: what would u do

Alternatively, you could always get two normal girls that are of breeding size and spend about the same as you would on the het albino pair.... then it wouldn't take three years. Problem is, finding a reputable source to get said breedable females. Not many breeders will sell breeding size females that are great eaters and good breeders.

Of course, the money would still have to be spent later on some sort of morph in order to get something other than a normal, but hey... if you've got the $600 to spend on the het albino pair, then *I* would get a couple or three normal females that are around 800-1000g, raise them up for a year, and in the mean time, be saving money for an 06 pastel, or some other co-dom that you can put with your three normals in 07-08.

    Just food for thought...

    Re: what would u do

Hm.. what are your goals? Do you want to breed to make money, or for the sheer experience it would give? I personally wanted to start breeding these to see if I could; it would be ultimate proof of good husbandry, etc. Well my first female laid her clutch in May, and only one out of the 8 eggs lived; the others must have been defective or something, as the conditions I gave them were optimal. It has upset me, but I still hope that last egg lives; it candled well today
I guess my point is, even if you spend the $$, you could still end up with infertile or possibly unbreeding snakes in the future, so buying to get a profit doesn't seem very realistic for small scale breeders like me. The big breeders have hundreds of pairs of snakes or possibly more, and can 'afford" to lose some and still make money.
But if you want that challenge, to breed and get a stunning morph, go with the hets or visible morphs. If you'd be pleased and ticked pink with a normal little hatchling (like I would, hehe) then go that route.

i'd go with the hets! if that's what you really want. 3 yrs is long time to care for an animal that you "really don't want". buying from a quality breeder will also help your expierence and be there for any problems you may have.

    Re: what would u do

Great advice...... I am looking at this 2 ways.

    # 1......I can just get a couple normal females, and have the enjoyment of raising them up and then trying to breed them with my 05 male. That was my initial plan, because i am like Ginevive and would be so happy to just hatch my own BP. Wether its normal or a morph.

    # 2.......Spend the extra dollars, get a pair of Het Morphs and do the same as the above. My only real concern now, after writing down pages of figures over the weekend is how much of a demand there is in my part of Canada for Morphs. I live on the East Coast in New Brunswick, and I am assuming that i would have to rely on shipping to the greater majority of people that would want to buy from me. Thats if i was to try and sell any BP's. There doesnt seem to be much demend for Morphs in my area.
