feeding for the first time today...


ok sooo I'm going to feed for the first time today b/c I know if she takes she's not getting too stressed out.

I want to have the best chance of success so I'm going to feed her what she was eating regularly at the store I bought her from. Live rat pups.

I know to monitor her and the rat at all times and to remove the rat if she hasn't eaten it within 30 min.

So what do i do just drop the rat in and let her find it? she is in her hide a lot and is probably going to be in there when I go to feed her, is she going to know something else is in there with her?

I'm going to wait till around dusk.

I really really want this to work out b/c I think I may be more stressed out than she is making sure she is ok, but I'm sure she is.

A couple of things ...

1. Rat pups don't have teeth ... you have NOTHING to worry about.

2. Don't handle her today ... let her be in her cage feeling calm and secure.

3. At around dusk, bring the container with the rat pup into the room with your snake. Place the container (box, bag, etc) on top of or near your snakes cage for about 30 minutes to "scent the room". The smell will help your snake "wake up" and start to get hungry.

4. After scenting the room, carefully and slowly open the cage and place the rat pup away from your snake (maybe other side of the cage) ... this will reduce stress on your snake and help her feeding response by allowing her to "go look for it".

5. No need to remove anything from the cage, leave it all in there. Removing items (water bowl, hides, etc) could cause stress.

6. Carefully close the cage up, back up slowly, sit down and relax. Sudden fast movements or loud noises could spook your snake.

If we're both talking that same "size" pups, then no, they don't ... they are mostly just big balls of fat and cartiledge ... the things in their mouth don't quite qualify as "teeth" yet.
