Interesting things I learned on AP
So this weekend on Animal Planet they had three hour long shows on snakes
seven deadly strikes
the big squeeze
and Mutual of Omahas: King Cobra and I
Well I learned some very interesting things about what you should do if your big constrictor (or any snake) latches on to you and starts to coil
they suggest
1.Pour warm to hot water on its head/mouth
2. Pour alcohol on its head/mouth. you can use rubbing alcohol or some gin or vodka..stuff like that.
3.bend the tail back and apply some pressure
those are some tricks that could help you get out of the snakes mouth and stop you from doing something you really dont want to do...like cutting its head off...stabbing it....shooting it..whatever else.
Why im posting this in a Ball python fourm...I dunno..but it could prove usefull.

Not to hijack the thread, but was that the same show where the guy had the cops shoot his "pet" burm because it wouldn't let go of his arm? My mom told me about it, I was just wondering if anyone had actually seen that.....I really don't know why she feels like she needs to tell me about stuff like that...::sigh:: -__-

yeah it was the same show...pretty sad I know.
By pouring alcohol down its mouth it upsets them and since its a bad icky taste makes them let go.
Thank you Cannibal Monkey....putting it here is A-okay with me!

Hope they first suggested that if you own a snake large enough to be capable of real danger to a handler, that your first line of defense is capable helpers (not your buddy who will scream like a schoolgirl and pee himself at the first sign of problems LOL). Even with Rauri the BCI, we are never unaware of his strength and do not allow him in a position or situation where trouble could happen. It still is a possibility, but respecting a bigger snake and thinking about scenario's and what you will do is I think better than just reacting in a panic situation. Just because most of the time this big BCI is puppy dog tame doesn't mean he isn't a snake and a creature of instinct. To believe otherwise and get lazy about handling him properly, would be just plain stupid.

Re: Interesting things I learned on AP
Well, I finally finished the third show last night (King Cobra and I). It was interesting to see the difference in quality of the three shows. The first one with Austin Stevens was a joke. It's the only snake show I know of where I'm actually rooting for the snake to tag the handler, and of course Austin never disappoints me. They should put the Benny Hill theme song on his shows for the soundtrack.
The Big Squeeze was slightly better, but still pretty ridiculous and not very herp friendly. BTW, the alcohol method is probably the best, but don't use rubbing alcohol unless you want to deal with a sick snake afterwards. Besides, you'll probably need the good stuff handy after getting coiled by a giant python.
"King Cobra and I" was very good. Very informative and loaded with cool Elvis music. I was amazed to see how violent they get when taking down a rat snake.
