Where is your BP while cleaning?

So here's an interesting question. What do you do with your ball python while doing your monthly (or more) complete tear-down and cleaning? Is your BP's room 'snake proofed' so that you just lay him somewhere in the room, possibly with a basking lamp, and let it roam around? Do you put it in a temporary rubbermaid home? Do you just have your spouse/parent/child handle it while you clean?

As a sub-topic, how much does your BP get out? Do you ever let it roam around the room while you watch, or is it pretty much either in your hands or in it's cage? Do you let it out in the yard while you watch? Do you get your snake leash and take it out for a slither on hot days? (that's a joke) Come on, I've seen pictures of people snakes outside, so I know some of you do it!

I put mine on the floor of the snake room. The room is escape proof but not hide proof. It doesn't take me more than 2 minutes to do each enclosure.

I try to take each of them out a couple times a week if only for a minute or two. When I was living in Florida, I always took them out in the grass and we had a screened in patio so they roamed out there on nice days.

I have spare tubs ready so I just pull out the dirty tub, put the new one in, transfer snake, and voila! Takes about 20 seconds, although about half the time I let them crawl around on a table that I use if they're awake. I have one pastel male that I got from Adam that always seems to enjoy spending more time outside of his cage. Every time I open it up to check on him, he will crawl out on my arm. He's a pretty funny guy. He's in shed right now and will still peek his head out of his hide to check out what's going on even though he can't see a thing.

We have transport carriers/temp caging things that we get from either Dollar General or WalMart. Works really well for a cage cleaning or a trip to the vet. This is the smaller sized one (we melted in the holes of course).


Generally when we are cleaning either someone holds the snake or it gets popped in a carrier. We try to get all the snakes out regularily for handling and they slither around on the couch and the livingroom floor under close supervision as they love a fast, sneaky dash under a couch cushion or playing "hey what's behind the entertainment unit????" LOL

We have in the summer taken a snake outside in the grass as long as both Mike and I are there but it's always a bit worrisome though they never seem to really move all that fast. Kyna unfortunately keeps thinking she's a tree snake and attempting to climb the big birch trees. She also thinks she's a water snake and attempts to head for our creek. LOL We also have a fully enclosed screened-in porch so in the summer that's a nice place to take the snakes for a bit of a slither.

Wow, looks like they can be quite playful and mischevious at times! I sure hope I end up with one that likes to get out and slither around. That one that crawls up on your arm when you open up the cage is pretty neat. Friendly and inquisitive! Who says snakes don't make nice pets?
