    Hide Question

Quick question for you guys. There's a possibility that I may be picking up a sub-adult ball today (if it probes female) that was surrendered at my feeder pet shop - the one I swore I'd never buy a snake from - but it was surrendered yesterday, so it appears to have good weight on it and they haven't had time to kill it yet (they can't figure out why the snakes they get won't eat - but that's another story).

So, I ran to Walmart during lunch and picked up a tub, some aspen, acurite, big water bowl and two 6 quart (I think) sterilite shoe boxes to make into hides, since I'm not sure if my largest bowls that I turn into hides will be large enough for it.

Does it matter if the hides are clear? Do the snakes care? Or do they care more about feeling snug inside something regardless of it's color? If this probes male, then at the very least, I'll have a tub set-up ready to go if I run accross another surrender in the future.

Brought my probe kit with me to work today, so I just have to stop by there on my way home.

I know it's not ideal to not have the tub set-up before picking her up (being optimistic here) but quite frankly, the conditions they keep their snakes in are less than ideal, and I'll feel better getting her out of there. Plan to order some provent-a-mite and buy some reptile relief while I'm there "just in case" and she'll be quarantined in a separate room from all the others - whew!!!!

So, if it probes female - I'll need name suggestions - oh Cassie!!!!!!

    Re: Hide Question

    I wouldn't suggest clear.

Remember that our goal is providing an environment where they will feel secure and to maximize that effect you want to use something they cannot see through.

I use the ESU creature cubbies (they come in 3 different sizes and are black) and my gals all seem to like them.

If you like you can PM me and I'll send you one to check out. No obligation here - I don't sell supplies but I do appreciate your rescue effort.

    Re: Hide Question

I've got clear right now as a temporary solution. They were only $.97 each. This is just until I can get something more appropriate. I usually like to be more prepared than this, but I can't get this ball python out of my head. It looked so bewildered out in the open in a huge tank with two withering away cage-mates.

If it turns out to be a lady, I'll snap a few pictures of her this evening.

Ah....that was me soliciting you for name suggestions! I actually thought of Cassidy or Raine, and Jo suggested Annie (as in Little Orphan)! LOL

    Re: Hide Question

hey robin, in walmart check out the dog/cat section. the have plastic kitty litter pans that make good hides for adults. just cut a hole in the bottom and flip over. they are around 2 bucks a piece.

here's a pic of them. a chunky soup can makes a good size circle to trace. easily holds girls around 3000 grams.
