They do not like being petted on the head and will pull away from you . All balls are different depending on where you purchased them, if they are captive bred and how much they were handled before you aquired them. My ball is extremly good and my 5 year old son pets her and we let her wonder around the living room, ALWAYS KEEPING AN EYE ON HER . The couch is an easy place for them to get lost in and let me tell you, it's not easy to get them out of some of the places they sneak away to .

Re: how do you handle your BP?
My BP is young and still in the nervous stage, so I just hold him in my hands and let him do what he wants. He doesn't ball up anymore (unless I inadvertantly scare him) but I don't touch his head/neck. If I ever put a snake on the floor I keep a very close eye on them! Make sure any dogs/cats are secured away, you never know what an animal might do.

Well my BP is still relatively young and not full grown, so no, I keep her on me all the time. She crawls (! OK slides) all round me sometimes, other times she's content to just rest on me and not move much. She enjoys her head being petted so long as it's a continuous stroking from neck up and not just a finger that is come out of nowhere suddenly poking at her head. She loves her fleshy side bits of her face being done mostly.

Re: how do you handle your BP?
When handling Gomez he's in my hands/on me or Karen at all times. I have a very vivid imagination- and especially with the kitty and rabbits all over the floor -I doubt even as he gets bigger I'd let him roam around any of the rooms on his own even supervised. Too many places to get into, even if it weren't for the other animals. I can't even figure how to get him out of his skull hide, let alone a pull out couch!
He's headshy, but seems to be relaxing about that and pauses ponderously if my finger comes up under his head for a bit of a chin rub. He seems to like that. Coming up from underneath is cool, patting head from above "Oh noe don't eat me!!" Otherwise I just let him cruise over my arms, torso, and lap and watch some Simpsons or something with us. /(^v^)\

my BP is quite the same, i thought it was my imagination that she likes me petting her, she doesn't ball up too! except it my wife sits next to me, she curls so fast, she tries to put her hand and lahsa gets away! , but when i put mine, lahsa doesn't mind and move on my hand/arm. how long since you had your BP and what time do you take her out?

Re: how do you handle your BP?
I truly believe all animals pick up very subtle clues from humans, whether from the scents we put off, our body postures, our breathing rates...stuff we aren't even aware we are broadcasting. We have one snake, Saoirse, who shows a marked preference to be handled by my husband Mike. Whether that's related to the fact that she is WC and Mike was as far as we know, the first person to successfully feed her...well we won't ever know. All it do know is that snake would ball up tight unless Mike handled her at first and to this day seems to be the most relaxed when she's with Mike.
We generally only handle our snakes in the evening hours when they are naturally awake and when our busy house is more quiet. It's a great excuse to put aside the housework, get off the computer, turn off the Xbox and just sit and quietly enjoy their beauty. I read somewhere that having a fishtank to watch actually can lower your blood pressure....I wonder if sitting with a lovely snake also does this?
