introducing snakes
I found a herp rescue sight that has healthy ball pythons in my area, I guess for those people that didn't realize what responsibility they would be undertaking by buying a snake...Well, anyways I currently have (a male I beileve I have seen the prothesis) that is very healthy, very friendly and is my closest friend and I would like to introduce a friend for him that is of the same nature. If this new snake or (snakes if I decided to have 3) hurt my original that I've had since he was a hatchling (captive bred) I would never get over it.. Any tips ????
The enclosure is a 55 gallon long one side is 80-85 degrees and the other is 70-78 degrees, I breed mice so he eats whenever he seems hungry, enjoys being misted and has a humidity of 55-60, any help here would be appreciatted!!
e-mail leprachan374@ameritech.net
Thank you!!

Re: introducing snakes
Snakes actually don't really get on with other snakes except for when breeding. Sharing a cage of any size will stress them out and sometimes they have been known to eat each other. Your little guy is perfectly happy and healthy as is, I'm sure, and I wouldn't muck with that. But if you'd like another snake, you can always use a seperate tank or tub.

Welcome to the site!
I think you will find the overwhelming majority of people will recommend (for very good reason) that you only keep one snake per cage. Also you'll want to raise your temperatures overall around 5-8 degrees. I'll dig up a few threads on the former subject for reference.

Re: introducing snakes
Thank you I will do that, do you know who I would talk to about how to use a chat forum? I would really like to interact w/others on this sight and set up my profile. I really think I am going to adopt this breeding pair I saw or if they're not available a rock python this agency also has. Thank you for your feedback!

Re: introducing snakes
You're considering either a Rock or a Ball? Quite a bit of a difference there...

Re: introducing snakes
I would think long and hard about getting a Rock Python. Rock's have the size of a Burm (if not bigger) and not half the sweet temperament. Don't get me wrong, I've heard of puppy dog sweet Rock's... but they're few and far between.
Temperament aside, the cost of feeding a full grown Rock is going to be high, as well as getting a large enough enclosure for him. You'd probably have to make one yourself.
Don't jump into something this big without doing a TON of research. If you still feel you're up to the task, then go for it... but that poor Rock has already been abandoned. Don't take him in unless you're planning for the long haul.

Hi! Welcome to the forums! Others have already given great answers to your initial questions, so I thought I'd get these for ya.
We have just recently gotten a live-chat format going. It's not "on" all the time though. At the moment, I believe we're planning on a once-a-week schedule for live chat, but that may change to something more frequent if we feel it would benefit the site and the community here.
In the meantime, feel free to post and converse through the forums. You can also send Private Messages to members and staff members.
To set up your profile, just look at the row of links along the top of the page. Click on "Quick Links" and get a drop-down menu. From there you get a variety of links to personalize your profile.
Hope that helps you get started!
