    CB or CH?

What is the real difference between Captive Bred and Captive Hatched? I know what the difference is basically, but is there any real significant difference between these two?

Is it safe to buy CH BP's that have been feeding well and weigh 200-300-400gm?

Captive Bred = Both Parents housed in captivity at time of copulation, ovulation, and just about every other 'tion you can think of.

Captive Hatched = 1 of 2 scenarios... Trappers collect eggs from the wild, eggs hatch in captivity... Trappers catch gravid females and the eggs are layed/hatched in captivity.

I know the meaning, but what is the difference in behavior between CB and CH as far as we the owners are concerned.

    Example:
CB babies from CBB or CH parents.

    and

CH babies that were hatched here in a facility and have been feeding and doing well from the start.

Risk ... I think buying CH babies that were not kept in the abolute best care from day one in country and not trained to be established aggressive eaters are more prone to feeding problems and potential problems with parasites than a captive bred animal from a smaller scale breeder. It's not so much that they were hatched in West Africa as it is that distributors take on thousands and even tens of thousands at a time and if they don't know how to manage such large numbers properly, there are going to be problems.

There are many reptuable distributors that sell well established healthy CH animals ... and for each one there are 100 people selling CH junk ... if you are planning on going the CH route, do your research and definitely don't try to go with the cheapest deal on the block ... you'll end up paying more for it in the end.

FWIW, I buy CH females every year and as long as the CH animals are coming from reputable people, they do just as well as CB.

Thanks for the reply, I was originally looking for 100% CBB babies, but all seem to have CH or CH that they interpret as CB. The ones that claim to have CBB haven't replied to any emails yet.

    Re: CB or CH?

All of my CH girls/guy do just as well (feeding wise) as my CBB girls. All of mine are very aggresive feeders... knock on wood.

    Re: CB or CH?

Adam's right, you do have to do your homework and know who are the good CH dealers. I'm getting three CH girls, hopefully next week. I know that they have been in the care of the person I'm getting them from since April and I know that they have fed for him aggressively each and every week.

Even still, these girls will have a vet visit scheduled for the day that they arrive to make sure every one is healthy.

Check references, which is what I did, and I also checked them out on the BOI on Fauna and there were no negative reports on him. There's another (the one that Ken got his from) that I wouldn't hesitate to use, and again, because of checking references (I asked Adam about him in this case and Daniel's also used him).

You learn if you lurk much (as I do) on other ball python related boards and just absorb as much information as you can. You start to pick up on who's good in the industry and who has horrible reputations.

    Re: CB or CH?

I've spent a week (7 days) trying to contact Mike Wilbanks via phone and numerous emails. I finally spoke with him on Monday morning at 10:00AM, he said he would get back to me within the hour (that was at 10:00AM). At 4:00PM when not hearing back from him, called back and left a voice mail with my home and cell # (that was Monday evening).

Three days latter...no reply from Mike Wilbanks!
It looks like I may just have to wait a few months to buy some CBB BP's.
