    Re: air/surface Temps

What do you mean by "air temp" ... the probe is measuring the "air" on the ground no?

The snake spends most of it's time on the ground, so that's where the temps need to be dialed in.

    Re: air/surface Temps

LM, I struggled with air temps for about a year before I got it through my thick skull that I was wasting my time. Rest your probes on the substrate, just inside the hides, and worry only about those temps.

    Re: air/surface Temps

NO i mean the surface temps on the bottom of the cage are perfect but the air in the cage itself is only about 78-80 degrees.......is this ok even if the groud is 90 on the warm side 83 on the cool and 87 in the middle///like the groud is the right temp but I cant get teh air temps up without worry about making the susbstrate to hot.. know what i mean?

    Not really?

If you're using a digital thermometer with a probe, it's measuring the air temp ... that might change as you move it from the bottom of the cage up towards the top, but the bottom is where the snake lives, so that is fine.

Unless you're using an infra-red thermometer to measure the actual surface temperature of the ground or encasing your thermometer probe in tape or something to prevent the air from effecting it, your temp reading should be the air temp at ground level .... right?

    Re: air/surface Temps

I imagine that by "air temps" lucifer's mommy is referring to the ambient temp all at the top of the tub. What you have sounds fine to me...like Adam said, the snake is going to be most concerned with the temps at substrate level...those are the measurements you need to concern yourself with.

    Re: air/surface Temps

i have a simular situation in my setup. I have probes that are in each hide. then i have another dig thermometer sitting on the substrate in the middle of my cage. this reads about 85 F and it also gives me my humidity. I also have another probe that is hanging about 2 " off the substrate and is also near the center of the cage. same area as my dig thermo that reads 85 F and my probe reads around 78 F. so about 7 Degrees difference 2" off the substrate. My Bp seems to be doing fine, so i wouldnt worry about it.

    Re: air/surface Temps

The rule that i go by is as long as the "ambient" temp in the cage does not go below 80 then everything is ok. Im a little obsessed with keeping mysnake in the right conditions so i use gauges that i have set high on the glass as long as on the ground( herpstat for the UTH). Ambient temp is always arond 80 which is totaly fine. Herpstat is set to 94 flatt.
