    her him weezing/whistling

last night a had my 7 month old BP out and i noticed that she was making a whistling sound while she was breathing. after a few minutes it stopped and i placed her back into her cage. My temps are 84 on one side and 94 on the other and my humidy right now is right about 58 %. I just recently got rid of the IR light i had because lately with the dryer winter weather my humidity had been in the 40 % range for about 10 days. I checked my BP again late last night and again this morning and there was no sound of her weezing/whistling. I know this is a sign of IR. should i be worried? or could it have been a case of her just having a stuffed up nose like we humans have from time to time. I also noticed her pushing on objects in her cage with her nose when i replaced her back into her set up. this was right after she stopped whistling.

RIs are risky business, every minute counts. The earlier the catch the better the results are. If you are unsure I'd still bring her in to the vet. Also, check and see if maybe a piece of shed is stuck around her nose area; this has happened to one of mine before. A bad sign is when they start "ballooning" their throat out.

it sounds like she is going into shed. the skin in their noses becomes loose and flaps around when they breathe causing a whistling type sound right before and during shed. she was probably trying to loosen or start her shed by rubbing her nose on things in her cage.

i sure hope she is goign into shed. but there have been no signs of an upcoming shed and she just shed about 2 weeks. I am keeping a close watch on her, if i notice any sounds like i heard last night, off to the vet i go.

Good idea, but I'll bet it's what mlededee suggested. My Coastal does this all the time before and after her shed. Before because of the same reason mlededee said and after because she always leaves a tiny flap over her nasal passage on that I have to peel off. I think she was a nose rubber before I got her.

    Re: her him weezing/whistling

We had one of ours shed twice back to back, about 2 weeks apart if I remember correctly (and of course, posted a panicked thread about it LOL). Hopefully that's all it is but do keep a close eye on her. RI's are awful things and not something to muck about with. I have occasionally heard slight whistling from a nasal scale right before a shed as well though and it always gives me heart failure for just a second LOL.

If you are at all concerned though, of course a vet is the only one who can truly say if your snake is okay and this is nothing to worry over or there's an issue that needs treatment.

My hog island is recovering from a nasty RI. It was big, throat blowing, bubbles, weezing ect... (she was a rescue snake and the previous owner kept her in a burlap bag). The best thing if there is even a question is to get it to the vet. Not to panic, but there is no use in taking a risk.

    Re: her him weezing/whistling

I am searching/reading posts, I am in the same boat, my bp has made this weezing sound about 5 or 6 times (that I heard) in the past week, I handle it daily,
I read 1 person said it could just be a deeeep breath
1 person says scales, from beginning/ending shedding,

My bp has made the sound upon the first 15 seconds of being out/ woken up, and maybe once in a 30 min. period after that, I see my self getting bit in the face trying to listen!!!! not really, but it's worrying me, I know it would be best to just take him to the vet but how much does an average trip to the vet cost? I have no money and don't want my baby to get worse because of that!!
A shed should be due, soon, should I wait?

*edit* just also read about loose scales coorilating with breathin, Ralf hasn't got the pink belly yet to show a sign of a shed, but his scales are noticably looser with less color???

    Re: her him weezing/whistling

Please, please, please, I cannot stress this enough times….. IF YOU THINK IT IS AN EMERGENCY, CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY! Get your animal to a qualified herp specialist or veterinarian. We are not doctors, we cannot provide you with the info necessary to treat serious stuff. We can however give you advice as what to do in the mean time till you see your vet with your animal, can provide a bit of encouragement and give you ideas as to how your animal got sick and how to correct the problem so later re-occurence don’t happen.

Vet visit costs vary, my advice to you, is call around and ask vets in your area how much a visit would cost. And if you dont have the money, borrow, beg or whatever you have to do to get your snake medical attention. Also, because we dont know when these things will come up, I suggest starting a savings account to take up for expenses like this that you dont have the money in hand for.

I took your advice, at the cost of my bank, I over drew $100 this morning and took ralf to the vet, and after a few minutes of examining/playing/admiring of my snake he was diagnosed to be HEALTHY!!!!! It was only $45 too!, as the vet had previously stated "if he did have R.I. I could be out the door with propper meds for $90-100", which is still no where as bad as the horror stories of vet bills for exotics that I have heard.

so thanks, as safe is better than sorry!!!! I encourage any one else ever in question to take the same advice and do what ever tou have to do.
