removing UTH's from glass
Can this be done? I have an aquarium with two UTH's stuck to the bottom. I am switching over to plastic, and would like to not have to buy more. Any tips on trying to get these things off?

Take it slow Chances are it will ruine it, the carbon elements tend to crack when peeling and cause hot/dead spots

It can be done, but it is hard. The only ones I have ever been able to do this with are the ZooMed ones. I have had good luck with them. They don't ever seem to rip, but the others are not so good.

Actually the ZooMed units have a warning on the box not to remove them once attached..

Oops... that is probably for warranty purposes...but I'm not doubting you...you definitly know more about them than me. I'll admit that I have done this and had no problems with them (one I have had for over two years and I have moved it around at least twice), but if Matt says not to your best bet would be to not do it.

Well the warrenty woudl be void but the thin carbon "strings" inside the zm's break very easily.. I woudl try it and check it out for a couple days with an IR thermometer before using it.. May be perfecty fine, but as always "safe not sorry"

Re: removing UTH's from glass
Speaking from first hand experience...DON'T DO THAT!!!
I experimented with a UTH that was off a tank that was given to me. It was heck to get off, then it warped the steralite container, and emitted that wonderful burning plastic smell. I say experimented, because no one was living in the stearilite.
My advice? Human heating pads. Seventeen dollars at Walgreens for the non-shut off kind.

They are excellent, huh? Once I found out about them I was hooked.

I have a couple of the zoomed pads laying around that I have stuck and re-stuck numerous times. All of them still work as good as they ever did. I still use them for temporary heat for traveling to shows and such or unexpected needed heat source. Just have to be carefull about how you remove it.

Re: removing UTH's from glass
i heard you should attach the UTH to a ceramic tile (like the kind used on your floors) and then just set the rubbermaid or glass tank on the tile (with UTH between the tile and tank)
this way you can move it from enclosure to enclosure without breaking it.
