? about quarantine
I am getting a RTB in the next couple of weeks, and was wondering what the rules are on segregating a new animal. I have one BP right now, and they will eventually be in the same room.
1.0 BP; Sir Hiss (I have a cartoon problem)
0.1 Blizzard Corn; Princess Fiona (Gaelic=white, fair)
4.0 Yellow Labs; Drake, Goose, Mojo, Buddy
1.1 Scarlet Macaws; Ace, Duece
3.0 American Bison; Death, Danny, Bambi
10.10 Race Horses (number changes a lot)

Re: ? about quarantine
I do anywhere from 30 - 120 days (depending on the source) in an isolated room (although if I worked with boas it would be much longer). I clean, feed, and observe on a single designated day of the week after I am completely done doing my main collections daily maintance for that day. I've recently started using disposable latex gloves to handle all isolated animals and their cage contents (seperate set of gloves for each animal).
The isolation room has all of it's own seperate husbandry items ... tongs, probes, scale, hides, water dishes, etc., and they are never mixed with anything from the main collection.
If you've ever seen the movie "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman, you can get an idea of what I am working towards!
I've seen other people go through the he!! of losing thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of animals by cutting corners and it's something that I will never let happen.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I do the same routine as Adam, but on a bit of a different scale. We end up with many animals in need of medical care so they are visited daily, after all others in general popultion have been dealt with. We also use gloves, seperate for each animal, and in some cases we also gown up. Again we get the sick guys in here. But it's better to be safe then sorry. We are very strict with our isolation protocol. When you have a small collection it is different. Better safe then sorry thou, always get a fecal done and a general vet visit. Never let the boa and python meet, even for photo ops. (Yes I've seen folks think it's cool to stick their burm and rtb together ).
Well you get the jist of it. Maybe someone with a smaller pet collection can help.
A question for the public:
Do you guys follow any kind of isolation protocol? Do you vet treat any or all of the new ones into your collections?
Just wondering
Thanks

Re: ? about quarantine
I do three month quarantine. I take care of established animals first, then the quarantined ones. I wash my hands for 30 seconds in hot water and antibacterial soap before AND after handling any of my animals.. but especially after handling quarantined herps.
I don't handle established animals after handling quarantines until the next day.
I have two rooms, unfortunately at this time only one is heated, so I can't stick all quarantines in the cool room. Hoping to fix this soon.
I have separate tools for established animals and quarantines. Two hooks, two bottles of chlorhexadine, two stacks of newspaper, two rolls of paper towels.. you get the idea.

Re: ? about quarantine
I tank the quarantines in a seperate room and then after 3months or longer I'll rack them with the rest.
I am a boa person and have never had any trouble with them using a 90 day quarantine, but there is always a risk. IBD can come out at ANY time. There is no safe guard against it. The only thing I can say is not to buy from anyone who you don't trust and know. It is hard, but ther reprecussions are harder.

Re: ? about quarantine
We use our bedroom as the quarantine room at the moment (though at one time with three new adult females all coming in we were up to the bedroom as QR #1 and the laundry room as QR #2 LOL). We follow basically the same procedure as far as not doing any husbandry on the new arrivals until the established snakes are done for the day. We have a great deal with our local herp vet who gives us a "rehabbers discount" so she will see any new snake of ours for a very reduced rate. The last two big females from the pet store went to see her before we even brought them home just to be careful.
With the boa rescue we kept his tank in a seperate room, he saw the vet and he wasn't even allowed out for exercise in any room of the house that the balls were in or could be in. Thank goodness it was early summer and Rauri enjoyed his times out on the enclosed porch with Mike LOL.
Just as a usual matter of course, we wash well between handling any snakes, even the established ones and then wash again when we are done with the snakes for the day.
