Pre-Shed Routine

Hi All,

I find myself once more with a foggy eyed pre-shed BP. I figure it might be nice to create a proper compilation of things to ensure for your BP prior to shed, the eye discoloration being the most immediate tip off (or so I believe).

I bump my humidity up to 70%-75% and have had fairly stable full shed results. I will cover her enclosure to provide more darkness and security while she sheds (vulnerability being the issue, probably unnecessary). I tend to wait to feed until shedding is complete, however, when the eyecaps were retained I fed her normally.

There is possibly a post or sticky, I figured a pre-shed priority list of husbandry might be helpful. If not, I apologize, if so, well by all means add on!

Signs of impending shed in the order I notice them:
- Lethargy and inactivity, BP no longer seen sticking head out of hide or cruising at night, immobile and unresponsive when hide is lifted, inactive if taken out for handling (other BPs might become strikey and irritable if disturbed)
- BP's scales start sticking up slightly in areas where the BP's body bends
- BP's colours become duller
- BP's eyes turn cloudy and "blue" (or in my albino's case, a greyish purple)
- Slight wrinkles around the neck appear

What I do when I notice my BP going into shed, usually confirmed when I see his colours turning dull:
- Stop handling
- Increase humidity to 70-85% by misting
- Add a ball of damp sphagnum moss to warm and cool hides
- I don't feed when the eyes are cloudy
- Feed the day after BP sheds and then resume usual feeding interval

Great, thank you. I too use sphagnum moss (my BP gets fussy and avoids a hide with sphagnum moss 90% of the time though).
