Breeders upping the price for expos?

I bought my snake, a VPI axanthic, for a reasonable price that was in alignment with what I saw other breeders selling their's for. This was about four months ago. I saw a VPI axanthic for sell by the same breeder but different seller for four times what I paid for my snake at an expo! This a common practice, up the price to something ridiculous for expos? This snake looked almost identical to mine, even had the same lineage.

Sellers can put whatever price on a snake they want, but bear in mind that buyers ultimately set prices. If no one wants to pay four times what you did for that snake then the seller ends up taking the snake home.

I can see sellers at expos setting prices a bit higher to allow some wiggle room for haggling, and to account for the fact that the buyer has the chance to inspect the snake in person for any health issues, and because the buyer doesn't have to pay for shipping.

That would make sense to me but hundreds of dollars added to the price tag seemed more of let's see if we can get someone that hasn't researched to buy this snake or they really didn't want to sell but everything has a price.

There's something to be said for impulse-buying, for sure, & you can bet there's plenty of that at expos. The other thing is that it COSTS the sellers to have selling space
at these events, & some may travel quite a ways to do so (think gas & accommodations), so while they don't have the "over-head" of a "brick & mortar" location, it's also
more costly than simply selling online. In any case, snakes are "worth" what someone will pay for them...it's a gamble on the seller's part when they set prices, but as
already mentioned, some also expect to haggle.

Buyers should walk into an expo knowing what they want and how much they are willing to pay for it. No different than if you are getting a new/used car, furniture, appliance, etc. do your research and due diligence before you put down money.

I’ve noticed at the expo here in Houston, that the prices tend to be about 10-20% lower. There are some people that try and bump the price a tiny bit. But they always have a table full of stuff when the other guys are almost sold out

Yeah, there comes a point when sellers really don't want to take them all home again...& for multi-day events, the second day they're going to be making more 'deals',
but waiting means your first choices may already be sold & long-gone.

Yep price drops even more on the second day but I have never been able to go the second day. I normally know what I’m looking for and if I find a perfect animal I’ll pay a little more than wait and see if I can save $50 tomorrow. I’d die of anxiety that night waiting for the next morning. Lol

That's been my experience too and this was a very small local expo so all the players didn't need to travel more than 100 miles and only one day. It just was off because I didn't see any other creatures with an incredible markup.
