Where do you buy that green rug/mat

I seen some cages in the gallery with the green mat for the surface. Where can I get some of that material? It looks like a grass rug.

It's essentially astro turf.. they sell them at pet stores as cage liners.

I wouldn't recommend them because they'd be a pain in the butt to clean all the time, and difficult to disinfect.

So the regular reptile bark/newspapers will do fine?

Much better. I use newspaper for anything except my burrowing snakes, for which I use bed-a-beast/eco earth. Aspen is great too.

I have to disagree there. I use repticarpet. It is great for me. I have 6 pieces (as they come 2 to a pack). I haven't been doing this long but to me its very easy to clean. I get my from www.drsfostersmith.com, www.lllreptile.com, or ebay. They have different colors too. Green, Gray, Brown, and Blue. It is made by ZooMed.

How do you disinfect it? You must have to soak it in something because all those nooks and crannies are begging to grow something nasty.

The less stuff I have to clean, the better. With 18 snakes, there's no way I want to mess with anything other than newspaper.. just pick it up and toss it.

When I clean it, I scub it with a brush and with washing powder and bleach. I then rinse it well and ring it out. I let it drip dry. Everything I take out and then put back into the enclosure also gets treated by getting spray down of chlorhexidine/water solution. Has been working for me and because you have the extra pieces, the time for the cleaning process (about 10 mins) is really minimal. I like it, but that's my opinion.

Also, its easy for me because I have only 1 snake. With 18, I'd choose an easier route, like either unprinted newspaper or disposable cage liners (http://www.kingsnake.com/cageliners/)

I used the ESU repticarpet stuff for a long time when I had less animals. I never had an issues with it and it was cheap. Although it is more likely to hold in bacteria and parasites. Newspaper is great, once a week I recieve a new FREE bag of "bedding" on my front step...can't beat that!

*whisper* OR you can just go to Home Depot or Lowe's and find the EXACT same stuff *gasp* for a cheaper *double gasp* price.


Sorry, I was being cute... But seriously, the indoor/outdoor carpet at Lowe's/Home Depot is the same stuff you get that is made for "reptiles". It is cheaper, and some come rubber-backed, so it will last longer. It comes in many colors. I believe I got a 6'x4' piece once and it was only $6.

For me... This stuff is a breeding ground for bacteria. I don't care how well you clean/disinfect, it will still smell like urates and poo(can we say ICK!). And this was soaking it in bleach water for a good half hour. I prefer aspen as it allows my snakes to get under it and hide themselves, it's easy to spot-clean, and when it gets dirty, just throw it away and get new bedding. Much easier and more sanitary IMHO.

Again I have to disagree, but I do so on basis of my case only. My carpets smell like Gain! Because that's what I clean them with. Gain and Bleach! No smells linger at all. I know I'm new to the game, but as of right now Repti-Carpet is good for me.
