Are these old retained eyecaps?
Hello all! I'm a fairly new snake owner. I took in a ball python and corn snake from someone about a month ago. The ball is approximately 13 years old, we think female, was very thin but has been eating and gaining weight great since we got her. She just had her first shed with us and it was completely perfect - one piece, eyecaps and all! However, I noticed that despite the eyecaps coming off with her shed, her eyes still seem a bit cloudy. I was hoping to confirm with people who know way more than me that these are old retained eyecaps (or something else entirely). The humidity in her enclosure generally stays around 70% (it's pretty humid where I live, the humidity in the room she's in stays around 60%) and her temps range from 92F (warm side) to 78 (cool side). We did initially give her a couple of warm soaks when we first got her as she was mid-shed (coming off in bits and pieces) and had retained eyecaps, but all the old shed and eyecaps came off. I think it's safe to say that her previous owners did not keep it humid enough in her enclosure, so there's definitely a possibility of old retained eyecaps. Let me know if more pictures are needed. Thanks in advance!

I just adopted one about a month ago. She was in rough shape do to neglect as well but was at least well fed. Her caps were completely stuck for who knows how long. After keeping the humidity up for a couple weeks she shed and the caps and everything came off in a million pieces. Hers kinda looks like that now too. I'm wondering if it's just some leftover from being in such rough shape and dried out before. The people I got it from left the screen top uncovered and there wasn't even any water in the dish. I live in the high desert so we have very little humidity here. I'm thinking I'm just gonna have to keep watching the humidity and wait another round and all should be ok. It seems to me like we are in the same boat. I'd say just keep the humidity up and wait. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination so hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in. Kudos for taking her in and taking the initiative to properly care for her! Mine seems to be doing extremely well after a month but she wasn't malnourished as far as I can tell. In my experience rescues make for amazing pets though so she'll be worth it. Mine acts like a totally different snake now that she's getting back to good health and her tank is dialed in.

Re: Are these old retained eyecaps?
It's hard to be sure just from pictures but I don't think those are retained eyecaps - in the first picture at full size you can clearly see the transition between the pupil and the white of the eye.
ETA or it could be your arm reflected in the eye....

Yes. Yes they are. This is what Odyn's eyes look liked when it started. Raise humidity until next shed and see if they come off. I'm a freak now when I see retained caps. I just want to scream vet. Don't mess around.
