    Multiple RHP's, single thermostat

Hey guys, I'm finally getting ready to place an order for 4 AP T10's, for 3 BP's and eventually my BRB. I'm gonna use RHP's as the only heat source all around. I have a herpstat 2, and I wanted to know, what is the best and safest way to plug multiple RHP's into a single plug? I would be putting the 3 BP's on one input, and the BRB on the other, just to clarify. Thanks!

    Re: Multiple RHP's, single thermostat

I don't have much insight into RHPs, I've only got 1 and it gets it's own probe. I did notice that it took quite a while to stabilize the temperatures in that one cage (36-48 hours), so this would definitely have to be set up and run several days with the herpstat and no animals. In the stabilization period I measured floor temps up to 100 (set for 88). It never does it now, but not safe for a BP before it is stable.

I have a stack of a few T8s, mostly using heat tape, and there is a decent difference (74-80) in ambient temps going up and down the cages just due to their location relative to A/C vents and air flow in the room. I have colubrids and BPs, so I just place them where the ambients work out best for us.

I don't think I would be willing to risk this 3 RHP, 1 probe thing with any animals I owned. Far better to just buy enough thermostats. If you want to try it, definitely do not put any animals in the cages until you've done some testing for safety. You would want it to
    1) stabilize the temperatures for several days, and
    2) have a week or two of measurements after it is stable that don't show any spikes out of acceptable temperatures
I would measure and record at 8AM, Noon, 6PM, & 10PM for 7 full days or more, and if any temps are above 90-92 or cool sides drop below 75 (not likely this time of year) or so, then seriously consider getting the additional thermostat. The midday temp may be hardest to measure because of work, but is probably the most important, especially if you are in a warm climate.

I am far from an expert, but this is my $0.02 from my experience dialing in temperatures on a bunch of different types of caging I've tried.

    Re: Multiple RHP's, single thermostat

I would upgrade to a thermostat that can handle multiple devices. Better safe then sorry.

I’d have to do some research and I’m traveling today.

I have redundant thermostats for all my Boaphile tanks. I got them directly from Jeff Ronne the Boaphile.

Not very expensive and each thermostat (2 per unit) has one probe.

I use one for both Behira and Shayna with the probe in Shayna’s tank. They have the same temp requirements and one tank is on on top of the other. Works great. I can run 6 devices off that one thermostat.

I imagine you could get one with that design.

Thanks for the help guys, I think at this point I'm already resigned to buying a herpstat 4 for the stack. Thanks!

So long as your rhp's do not exceed the wattage as your thermostat you can use a power strip to plug them into the single thermostat. As long as all the cages are the same size and rhp's are the same it should maintain close to the same temps. I did this for a couple years with no issues however there is some risk. If the rhps in the enclosure with the probe was to fail it could cook the other enclosures if you were not home to hear the alarm.

    I doubt you'll regret that Herpstat 4.
I have a 4 and a 2. And the interface is much easier to navigate on the 4. (It let's you go from the 1st item in the list to the last, so editing output 1 and then exiting takes much less effort)

It's great that they made exiting menus easier, especially with 2 additional channels to scroll past. The buttons also somehow feel a bit nicer, but not really sure if they're any different in reality.
