    Question Missed Feeding

    Hello everyone!

so as some of you know I’m new to BP keeping. I ended up going on vacation this weekend and when I went to feed my BP she was in her log hide and didn’t want to come out so I wasn’t able to feed her before I left.

So i was wondering do I feed her On schedule this week or feed her 5 days of when she would’ve ate instead of 7? So she eats Sunday on a normal basis.

Also o weighed her in at 151 g, and I was told to feed her 2 fuzzies but that only equals around 12g total which isn’t enough following the 10-15% rule. When I looked for her poop all I found was a small little semi liquid thing on the side of her hide and it was very small. So I am under the impression she’s being under fed. Should I move to pinkies or more fuzzies? Thanks for any and all advice!

I feed my guys every 7 days, But if they refuse one week I just wait a week and try again. If they don't want to come out of the hide you can always just pick it up so they are not in there.

As for food I would move up a size fuzzy are too small. You could go to small mice or to rat fuzzys. Tho some times they can be picky about switching to rats.

    Hello.

I figured I'd share a few things with you.

    1) it's best NOT to feed for 7 days before leaving for a vacation. The reason being if the animal regurges it won't be left to stew in the mess. There was another thread recently about this and Deborah included a link where that actually killed the snake.

    2) Fuzzies are way to small for a BP. They eat hoppers right out of the egg, for typically only their first 3-5 meals, then quickly move up in size to small adult mice.
Pinkies are even smaller, you don't want to go backwards.
See the chart below for reference.
Yes, there is no poop and only a small amount of urates because the animal is underfed. It is using nearly 100% of its meal just to survive.

    3) I would stick to offering every 7 days.
Offering too often can stress the animal and lead to more refusals.

Lastly, I'm curious why you thought you couldn't feed her if she was in her hide? That is the perfect place to feed.

Sorry for the late response but thank you so much for that chart. I was confused for a bit about the mice sizes, to make up for it i got her a small mouse and hopefully it isnt too much.
And I couldnt feed her in her hide because its a log in the hot side which she gets into the hole of and I cant get her to come out, as well as the fact she tucks her head in the middle so even if I swing her meal on either end she wont smell it or come out. I usually wait for her to come out and then feed her but before we left she was in there and I had to go in 10 mins and she didnt come out so I couldnt feed her, and I didnt want anyone else to feed her in case they did something wrong. But thank you again for your help! I'll stick to her schedule and feed her bigger foods, which will probably be 1 small mouse weekly.

Sounds good. And youre very welcome. Thats what we're here for!

As for feeding in her hide: trust me, she smells it. And if it's heated properly she knows it's there.

Sooo.. just gave this exact advice to someone else ..

Do me a favour ...try the hairdryer trick ..
Just wait till evening , dull lighting .
Have the glass doors open , mouse in tongs .. blast it with a hairdryer for ten seconds and INSTANTLY dangle in front of the snakes face ... don't blink !!

If it shows any interest simply reheat and offer INSTANTLY again , just repeat the process exactly until it grabs it ...
