    Question Will it workout longterm?

    Hello, everyone!
Just a fussy thought that's been eating away at me for the past few days:

I have my BP in a glass tank set-up. Tried setting up a tub for her, but that failed bc my temps (especially ambients) were always too low. I know glass tanks aren't ideal, believe me, I've run into every problem in the book trying to get mine as it is now. My BP is doing well. I've said this many times before, mostly as a reminder to myself. She eats, she poops, she sheds, but I worry whatever i have now isn't "a good longterm solution".

What has me the most concerned is the humidity. I live in a very humid city. My house humidity is 50% (will drop in winter, along with temps). I use a ZooMed ReptiFogger set low, on 24/7, along with foil wrap covering half of the top screen, which keeps the humidity at a comfortable ~60%. I've tried just about every trick there is when it comes to humidity, but everything either skyrockets my tank to 90, severely minimizes healthy airflow, or doesn't do anything at all.

So far, having a fogger/humidifier and heat lamps in a glass tank works best for me. From a technical standpoint, does this sound like a bad way to keep a BP? Will having the fogger on like this be unhealthy in the long-run? Should I just give the tub project another go?

foggers with really fine mist particulates are thought to be a cause of RIs, but other than that, if it is working for you, rock on man.
I have the same issue. once I switched to bioactive though, it keeps my bp perfect in a glass tank.
now I have him in a 4ft glass tank with a pro heat rhp and led lights and a mistking that runs twice daily for a few seconds. there is an initial humidity spike, like you are saying, but it goes down in 30-40 mins.
he has perfect sheds every time, and his feeding response is just as good as my hognose now, if not better. now darn near every time I enter the room he is perked up and looking for food.

to help insulate though it does have a foam background on 3 sides.
for airflow you can try computer fans. I got 2 and a controller for about 30$ on amazon. I paid a little more for quieter fans though.

Thanks so much for the prompt and helpful reply! I had never heard of foggers causing RIs Maybe I should consider an alternative to keeping in humidity, after all... By chance do you remember what site/source you found linking foggers to RIs? And what do you mean by "really fine mist particulates"? Is that the consistency of the mist/fog? Or particulates as in small mineral particles?

Bioactive vivs are amazing, I'd sure love to try my hand at it one day! I'm not too confident in my DIY abilities to scrap one up, though. The best I've done so far is insulating the glass to keep in heat, as you did too. And sorry for so many questions, but what substrate do you use? I used to mist for humidity back when I had my BP on coco husk, but now that she's on paper towels, the fogger has been my biggest help.

I honestly dont hold on to links like that. But the ri and fogger thing has been around for a while. The particulate size is the size of the water drop. I also said "thought to cause" because i personally think it is bull-puckey. I use a mist king which uses super fine mist and have no problems. I honestly think if a fogger did cause an ri it was more than likely that the person just left it on for way too long or used dirty water or something but blamed the machine anyway.

Ah, i bet if you tried you would do fine. You could always try practicing on a small scale till you get it just how you want it then try it on the actual tank. (I do this for new projects sometimes.) Plus, the amount of info out there on bioactive makes it pretty easy in the end. I made a substrate mix. If you want i could give you the recipe. Cost me about 50-60 bucks and i did two 4ft vivs and still have a 27gal tote full of it.

And as for asking so many questions, dont worry about it. That is what this place is for. Besides, it is better to ask, then to not know.

Also be sure to clean the fogger. A quick google right now shows that gunk buildup in the foggers is the culprit. So yeah, either way it is user error, not the machine itself.

Yeah, I went and looked some things up right now. I agree, a lot of what came up seems to link water quality and poor maintenance rather than the fogger itself. I clean mine out every week and use bottled water (which, if the label is reliable at all, is demineralized).

That's a great idea. I might just start a mini-viv project when I find some free time. I've seen the vast amount of info and guides on bioactive setups, and some of them are really remarkable with the way they think of solutions to stuff. For now, I think I'll keep her on paper towels, but your substrate recipe would sure come in handy for when I get deep into making the bioactive viv!

Again, all your help is very much appreciated. It's a constant learning process when it comes to keeping a BP for the first time, haha.
