Partial shed- cause for concern?

Hello, all.

I am currently about to feed Nagini, who is in shed. I found pieces of her skin, and she is clearly still shedding. I was under the impression that it is always in one big piece. Is this a cause for concern?

She did take her meal immediately.

Probably not any cause for concern, unless it's actually "stuck" & dried on? Hopefully with the pressure of a meal in her tummy, she'll feel inspired to
continue the shed. Just make sure it doesn't stay on too long and get stuck...keep her humidity up, maybe offer a humid hide if she doesn't have one.

Snakes will shed in one piece when husbandry is correct. Since your snakes shed is coming off in pieces humidity was probably too low, or the snake may be a bit dehydrated.

Important areas are: eye caps, vent and tail tip. As long as these areas shed properly then nothing serious will come of the poor shed health-wise.

For now, I would give the snake a short soak in like warm water (about 80 something degrees). Depending on the size of the snake you can use a storage tub, bucket or bath tub. Only put enough water in so it's covering 1/2 of the snake, you don't want the snake submerged. Also, keep your eyes on the snake the whole time. After 10-15 minutes take the snake out and let it slither in a damp towel, applying light pressure. The remaining skin should come off, but DO NOT peel it off, let it come off naturally. Repeat if needed.

Next time she's in shed keep an eye out for when her eyes clear and she gets her colour back THEN start spraying the viv well .... a few times a day until you see or come across the shedder skin 3 to 7 days later ... I usually find the skin under one of the hides in a rolled up mess .

It's always cool when they shed in one piece, but in reality, they often use abrasive rocks or branches to slither against for help, & those tend to tear the shed.

On the other hand, if it's a "million pieces" and/or truly stuck on, that's the time to look for more answers: it can be simple, like dehydration, humidity too low,
or something like internal parasites or other health issues that causes it.

Her humidity was around 60-70%, and that's in the terrarium itself. Her humid hide would have been considerably higher; the moss was still damp to the touch.

I will give her a bath, etc. tomorrow when I get home from work. Thanks for the advice!

If you do soak .. remember they're fabulous escape artists !!

When you get it out have a very damp, rough textured towel ready and let it wriggle inside the towel for a while , apply very , very gentle pressure with your hands ..
