    Have Something Going on........

so i have a tic who is just over a year, and i put him into a new enclosure, its a 6'x2 1/2'x18". he was in a christmas tree tub and doing great. i moved him over today to the new enclosure, my guy is over 5' bout the thickness of the diameter of a half dollar when empty.

he is now i wouldn't say pushing but he is "running the glass". or he taps it like bumps his nose then backs up, temps are on point, humidity is too. he has hides on both sides and a water bowl in the center. he has now been in it for about 5 hours.

also the enclosure was used prior, got it from a guy locally that had a tic in it before and now that the flex watt is heated up the hot side, it does have a hint of the the previous in habitant... i thought i got it all, i washed and scrubbed the sucker down but, i guess i didnt, this is a ABS plastic enclosure. i think it may be this sent driving him nuts, cause i pull him out of the enclosure and he wants to chill for a second when i pull him out, but then he fights to get back in the thing.....

    any help would be amazing,

    Zack.

My retic is the same way and all my cages were brand new. Caesar loves to be petted and loves to hang out on the litter dam when i open the door. He sometimes gets a wild hair and climbs on top of the cage stack or hangs down and goes to the floor but overall, he is happy to just hang out in the cage. It's a 72x30x18 AP T25. And Caesar is about 7-8 feet.

I assume you have hides on the warm and cool side? Just give him time, he will mellow out im sure once he explores everything. Also when did you last feed him? I know my retic windshield wipes at night when he wants petting or he wants food. Maybe you got a weirdo retic like mine. Try petting him for about 20 mins and see if he mellows out and lays down. That's what Caesar does.

Yes i have hides on the cool and hot side, he usually spends all his time in them unless he wants to perfect coil on the heat... he hasn't eaten since last friday, i offered on monday but no take.... i dont power feed, i feed just enough at the moment (building rat colony, and i need to get rid of bad mothers/violent offenders and he is the go to for this). he did have a bigger meal though that friday.

i didnt try handling him much after was in there due to not wanting a "negative handling". maybe some more time he will mellow. this thread was started to be ahead of the curve rather than behind. i didnt know if maybe he "smelt" some tail and now is in a mood as well. but i didnt think males breed at a year....

    thank you for the reply!

If it's his first day in a new enclosure, and particularly his first time in an enclosure with a glass/acrylic front, he's probably just exploring his new digs. I wouldn't worry just yet.

If I had to guess (far from an expert, novice actually.) I would say you have a smart snake in a new home trying to figure out how to interact with everything. My new girl Rainbow is in a 5' by 2' by 2' enclosure while she is being quarantine. For her first 2 years she was raised in a tub. She explored everything around her. I don't think she missed an inch of her surroundings, including the ceiling of the cage. I thought she was overly stressed with the substrate not feeling right to her and opened the door and had some cool bonding time. After a min or 2 of running she settled down and gently wrapped herself around my arm and explored me as I held her. I think she was studying me as much as I was her. After about 15 min of handling I encouraged her to crawl back into her enclosure and she explored a little more before settling in her hide. I cant wait for her to go into her new enclosure and have a whole new world of exploring to do. It has a tub large enough she can swim a little as well as things to safely climb on. For now she has to do the time.

Just takes time and they need to settle.

Mid he’s doing this days later I’d be concerned not 5 hrs in

give it a few days it will settle.

I call it the “real world” effect lol. Remember that MTV show. When the people first arrived they run around the house like nut jobs fighting over rooms and who goes where.

i guess seeing out might be a big shocker, the christmas tree tub was kind of hazy and not real clear, well as clear as the acrylic glass. i did hold him about an hour or so after my initial post to see whats up, he did seem a little more squeeze (meaning squeezing me), like when periscoping, he would wrap his tail around something (normal), but a lot tighter than before. and when wrapped around my arm he was A LOT tighter than normal.... had to unwrap him a few times..... i am thinking he is stressed to be honest.

this morning he was wrapped up under his water bowl (a plastic dog bowl that is anti tip and has access to the underside of it), so i feel as though this is better than running the glass.

Some are more prone to pushing in clear front caging and won't in tubs. Some are the opposite and will push when in tubs but not in a cage. Some will push when the enclosure is too large, some will push when too small, some will push when it's just right but they won't when in something that is either too big and yes, some won't when in something 'too small'. Some push for fun, some push for food. Some don't push at all.
Sometimes giving them something to 'play with' will stop, one of the males is a pusher around breeding season, we give him a 2 liter bottle with some water in it and he'll push that around his cage instead of spending all his time pushing at the doors.
I wish a had an answer for you.
I think if there was a magic way to get them to stop pushing all retic keepers would be happy!

Hopefully yours will cool off once used to the new enclosure.

Mine pushed for a while , just moved him into a deeper/ taller viv and he stopped immediately- also adding branches can help apparently.
