Note to self get hemostats (sp?)
I was feeding DD f/t for the first time tonight. I dropped the rat and without thinking went to pick it up and BAM. Right on the back of the hand. So now I have four very small scratches. Didn't hurt at all just startled me a little.

Hemostats are quite useful. Kitchen tongs work well in a pinch, though.

Yep that's what we used for ages....dollar store kitchen tongs LOL. We got a nice pair of hemostats from a local medical supply place (they rent wheelchairs and sell med stuff) for around $5.00. Not a big set but fine for now....well except for Brannagh the Brat LOL. I'm considering using the freakin big BBQ tongs on that lady!
Hope you are okay and welcome to the fun world of S.F.E.!

Us herpers tend to use random odd acronyms and technical terms and expect everyone to understand them. lol It can be a steep learning curve.

I have kitchen tongs that I use to handle dead rodents......ha ha.....and I have yet to have a SFE, but I have come close a few times

Re: Note to self get hemostats (sp?)
The worst part is convincing my nine year old that it's not DD's fault I put my hand in the way of his food. I think Cody may have nightmares tonight.
Ahh, the joys of a child that has night terrors. I think I will have cold feet in my bed tonight.

Re: Note to self get hemostats (sp?)
Been there, done that Dawn. The kids are very wary of Bran right now but with her, they should be!
With our 4 we are just working with them to understand. The kids know that even with the bite Mike took this week it was TOTALLY our fault. Bran is just doing what any snake might do given an uncertain background....Bran just wants to survive...she doesn't know we aren't going to hurt her. We handled her poorly. We have a large brain and can understand consequence...none of our snakes can do that...so totally our fault as most bites are.
The kids know that snakes only bite generally out of hunger, fear or defensive reaction. The are learning that the snakes deserve respect and learning they have limits they will defend if they must. Actually I think there are some super lessons about life for my kids with these snakes in the house.
They also enjoy chortling "don't have an SFE!" at Mike and I when we feed (rotten lil boogerheads!). Sorry I didn't type out what that meant by the way.

Re: Note to self get hemostats (sp?)
I just use a very small pair of forceps, slide the door open, dangle the rat and slide the door back to the handle so there is no way I can get hit.
Longer ones would be eaiser though.
