Anyone know how to test a temp gun for accuracy?
My temp gun is a Pro Exotics PE2 and Ive had it for about 15 years now. I worry it may be getting too old and maybe not so reliable..Thanks

I was told to hit the thermostat in my house, or a reliable thermometer.
Then you can see what the temp gun is relative to those and adjust accordingly, if necessary.

I just tried pointing it at boiling water(should be 212 degrees F.) but the tempgun read 198 and that is way off. We are at only about 600 ft above sea level so the water should still be very close to 212 at boiling point. But again Im not sure if this is an accurate way to check it.

Ignore emissivity settings, you most likely can't change that

Unless you have a certified meter (Fluke, etc.) to compare it against, nothing can guarantee 100% accuracy. Just like weigh scales having the "not certifed for sale or trade" printed on them. The devices we buy at a price that can be afforded, are usually close but 100% accuracy is not guaranteed.

They seem to be extremely consistent for the record .. and great for those awkward spots under hides and in back corners etc . A bonus is that our cat , dog and my Lake Malawi cichlids all love chasing the red ,a see dot all over the place ..
I bought two , five years apart , they look the same but different makers , different label etc and they give near identical readings ..

They also match up with readings from digital thermometers with wired probes like this one ... so I'm content to trust them 100%.

Take an ice cube out of the freezer and put the temp gun within 1 inch of less from the ice cube and see what it reads. It should read 32F or very close. That is about as accurate as you are going to get. Also remember, the farther away from the object you are checking, the more the temp could be off because the beam has to travel. Thats why most temp guns say to try and put the gun as close to the object as you can.

Ice can be well below 32, so this is not a good test.

Yeah true but you know it will be at least 32F lol. Maybe put a glass of water of in the freezer and when it starts to freeze, check it. It will be somewhere close to 32F as it is starting to freeze /shrug

Ice water will always read at 32 degrees that’s how to we calibrate our digital thermometers but IR guns are different I suppose. Obviously can’t calibrate but it has a lot to do with distance and ambient temps, but I could be mistaken
