    CHE heat and tstat probe

    Hey guys,

I've got a tub set up right now for my ball, but due to my ambient temps in the house, I'm running a che with it. I had it set up with heat for about two weeks before Talion got here. My heat lamp dome has a dimmer built in, so I've been regulating that way.

The temps vary a degree in either direction from ideal, and I just adjust it as needed. All the reptiles are in the hallway, so we walk past them 10+ times a day and I just constantly check and adjust if needed. Getting tired of that though so I ordered a jumpstart.

Now, I know usually you'd just dangle the tstat probe a few inches under the che to catch the ambient temps and adjust, but would I still do that if my hotspot is being maintained by the che as well? Basically, maintaining 90° in the hot hide radiates through the tub enough to bump the ambients in the cool side right to 80°.

I know traditionally everyone just uses belly heat, but as far as I'm aware, ambient heat gives him what he needs just as well. (Please correct me if I'm wrong - I don't mind). If it's a big deal to have the set up that way, I can go out and buy a heat mat, hook that to the jumpstart, and just use the dimmer to keep the ambients up. My only worry would be that the ambient temps on the hot side, where the mat would be, would still be in the 72-75° range that my apartment is at.

Anyways, Thanks for any and all input guys he's steady at 80° cool side and 90° hot side, 50-60% humidity, just looking to not have to worry about adjusting it constantly.

Pic of his current set up.

I used my Herpstat for my CHE before winter hit (I had to switch to using both heatpad and CHE bc my tub's a lot longer and my che wasn't really cutting it by itself....), and as long as the ambients are right on the hot side my hotspot was dead on. I tend to like my hot side a bit cooler though, 86-88 degrees with the hotspot varying 88-92.

It depends entirely upon what you put beneath the CHE. Like if your hotspot is a hide, or some slate rocks, then you just make sure the temps are ideal and if not adjust the temps on the thermostat accordingly. Just like the dimmer, only you're not messing with it constantly because the thermostat does it by itself for the most part. You'll just have to adjust the set temp until you reach what you want.

You've already proven that this setup works for you. You'll just have to find that perfect set temperature for the thermostat that mimics you messing with the dimmer constantly.

Fair enough. I have the hot side thermometer probe inside the hot hide, so I know what the temp is where he's actually spending his time. So I can just hang the tstat probe somewhere below the CHE, and keep the tstat at whatever temp that gets me the desired 88-90° in the spot. That sounds good.

How did you actually hang the probe? I don't want to place it on the floor, because of all the same reasons you don't put the probe for a heat mat inside. Do you just hot glue the wire of the probe to the lid of your tub so the probe hangs in the air to get the temp? Could I just secure it between the screen and the che, under the dome but outside of the tub? (Basically on the lid/under the dome?)

I want access to lots of money so I can just have a t8, a rhp and a herostat xD
    Income tax time perhaps!

Any of those could work. I just dangled mine on the side of the tub and used a couple zip-ties through a vent hole. It was directly below the CHE, but Maze kept climbing on it and getting herself tangled right there, and it was a bit too close for comfort for me (She's a naughty noodle :/). Do note that if you place it between the CHE and the mesh that it would get insanely hot, maybe even too hot for the probe to handle. I think my Herpstat probe can go up to 150 degrees, and the temps at that distance are WAY hotter than 150 degrees.

Fair enough. I think I'm getting too hung up about having the probe right under the lamp (which I can't do if it's secured to the wall) but really as long as x temp on the probe gets 90 in the hotspot, it really doesn't matter if it's exactly under the lamp or not.

Thanks Starscream. Having someone to bounce ideas off of helps me get out of my own head. Pretty sure I overthink everything lol.
