New adoptee female bp arriving Wednesday

Her name is Maude and her pics are in my gallery. Maude's history is not so great....WC...sold from a pet store in downstate Michigan back in Feb 05 to owner #1.....then in May to owner #2...now to us next Wednesday. She's been to the vet and all that and is a female. She's 39 inches long and 620 grams.

Maude is a snake that just isn't eating well or consistently though is currently in decent shape. She's been loved and cared for by her current owner but she needs a new home and we've offered to take her.

We're going to try our best with Maude. She'll be in quarantine from Baby and Punkin for the next while as we settle her in and have our vet take a look at her. We know we may be in for heartbreak here or at the very least a long, slow road with Maudie. Please keep her in your thoughts.

650 is tiny for a WC girl ... she may be a 03 or older CH animal that was just never trained to eat well.

If she is actually WC, the best advice I can give you is to set her up in a small rubbermaid (28 qt tops) in a closet (no lights, no surrounding activity) with some cypress mulch. Get a small hide box that barely fits around her and bury the sides and back down into the mulch and leave her there. Keep her very warm (high 80's). I'd wait 4 - 6 weeks before offering her food. Then slowly start offering her small meals. If she eats, don't push it, every other week is fine at first. She's going to need to learn the "rythm" of captivity and it is going to take a while.

I've gotten all of my WC girls to eat like champs sooner or later using this method.

Adam, apparently the original pet store that sold her to her first owner "admitted" she was wild caught for what that's worth.

We are heading out tomorrow to pick up her set-up to have it all regulated prior to her arrival Wednesday morning so I do thank you for all the suggestions and will certainly follow your wisdom. I have a spot in our master bedroom that is quiet and very low light where she's slated to go (where we started Baby and Punkin actually). We will maintain strict quarantine and "hands off" until we have established a consistent feed pattern with her.

My only question is about having our vet see Maude. My first instinct is to say....she's been seen by a vet after she was originally purchased (information passed to me that she was given a de-worming type treatment as well as an antibiotic for a slight wound to her side which is now healed)...she is free of mites or ticks...so I feel it would be best to not stress her with a visit to our vet at this point.

She was purchased in Feb 05 so she has been in "captivity" so to speak approximately 6 months. There is no information at this point as to her approximate age other than she was probed as female. Mike and I talked a lot about how this will be a very slow process with Maude and we need to keep our hopes realistic with her. We realize that some just don't ever adjust to captivity but we are going to give Maude her chance and just watch for tiny steps forward when they occur.

If she's already been checked over by a vet, then maybe settle for a fecal sample to be checked until you have her well established? Just to double check! I think it might be a good idea to get her as settled as possible before stressing her again after her trip. Of course I'm just offering my thoughts on the subject and may be totally off. As always Adam is full of great advice. (and other things too but that's another thread ) Keep us updated on her, Jo!

I would agree that if she has been checked already, no need for the added stress right now. If you see symptoms that indicate that she needs a checkup then by all means do it. If she doesnt regurge and doesnt have any crawlies in her fecal, I will sit tight for the moment. Kudos for taking in a rescue! I did it a year ago and he is one of the best snakes ever. Like a puppy dog. But its a long road and he still isnt 100%. Good luck!!
