Are snakes ADDICTIVE? And some general info about SD rectics

Hi guys, so I was wondering if any had only one snake, and are they addictive. I think that they certainly are! Please share your experiences. I would love to hear them.

I came across SD retics, aggressive feeders, fast, intelligent and definitely not like pet rocks. So I have a ball python and a dumerils boa and I was always onto the next thing. All these snakes seem to be so addictive like I Want just ONE MORE. A carpet, blood python, SD retic, another ball, hognose. There is so much out there!

I am also 15 so I need to just chill out a bit and take a step back. What do you guys think? Same like me or am I just crazy? Would love to hear any experiences!

Re: Are snakes ADDICTIVE? And some general info about SD rectics

I just got my life situated enough that I could really delve into the hobby this year. I've had four bps since I was in my late teens, but I just purchased five more this summer. I might get one more this year and maybe a BRB, which I've been thinking about for a long time.

Not so much addicting as it is fascinating and fun, I think. The variety of morphs just makes it impossible for me to have just one or two, because they're all stunning. I see one with a pattern that catches my eye and I loathe the thought of missing the opportunity to own such a pretty snake. I've picked my favorites, and will continue to do so

There will always be a few more that I want. I've come to terms with it. Most of the species I'm interested seem to be only sporadically available, or downright hard to find. Ken Foose has rubber boas AND Russian rat snakes avail. right now.

I want!!! Whatever...they are out of the budget for now.

I'd say they are addictive for some reason .

I've got Burms / Retics /Royals/ Boas / Corns / Kings / Rat snakes /and I reached 24 snakes before realised that as a hobbyist I was just too many to ENJOY ... I'm currently reducing my collection and I'm down to 20 .

I'm letting the young snakes go and keeping the ones I've had for a while as the emotional hold is greater with them . Also keeping a couple of the tiny hatchlings .

I just want more time to handle and general enjoy them .

I only have one, a ball python. I've had him for two years now as my only reptile. However, for about 1.5 years I have wanted a piebald...I think that will satisfy my addiction. I like to tinker with the habitat every now and then, take him out to handle, ect. If I were to get a lot more, then my time spent with each would decrease and that is the part that I enjoy the most...so no matter how addicting I think they are, I'm cutting myself off at two

I only have one snake so far- a ball python. I would like to get a carpet python and a dumerils boa but right now I'm in a small apartment so I am waiting until I have more space.

Re: Are snakes ADDICTIVE? And some general info about SD rectics

I just got my first ball python in July (first snake in general), but I have wanted to own a snake since I was a child. I'm finally in a situation where I feel like I have the space for him. As I've been getting to know his particular behaviors over the past few months, and as I have been increasing my knowledge in bp husbandry, I have become increasingly fascinated with him, and snakes all together. I. WANT. MORE.

That being said, I took a year to decide that it was actually time to get the first snake. I feel like it would be so easy to just get another one... but I am not going to get another just yet. I'm going to wait at least 6 months to a year to see if I'm just amped up, because he is new and awesome, or if I actually want to turn this into a bigger hobby.

You, having multiple snakes already, know that this is a hobby in which you are interested in pursuing. My advice would be to wait a little while, and see how you feel in the future. I only think this way, because I personally would hate to give up a snake after taking it home, because I would hate to have to re-home it, and I know (while it may not miss me) I would miss it. I also know that there are SO MANY types of snakes that intrigue me... I would love to one day have an Emerald Tree Boa, but that is a challenge for another day, when I know I'll be able to keep a constant humidity for it.

    Best of luck to you!

I currently own 13 ball pythons. I work solely with recessive stuff pieds and clowns. Everything I have I have been working into those 2 projects. I love handling all of mine. I would say they are very addictive. I just really limit myself on what I produce every year. I don't ever want the quality of care to my animals to ever decrease cause I have to many, and I stretched myself to thin. My max will be 20-25. No more than that. I want to make sure I have time for everyone. I have kept a green tree python, columbian rainbow boa, and a garter snake. They are all awesome in their own special ways, but my favorite has always been my ball pythons. My oldest girl is pushing almost 7 this year. Love watching them start as baby noodles, and grow into chunky monsters lol.
