One is worth more than the other?
As I do most days I've just read the news portion of our forum and just had to comment on the first one about the predator/prey Bland County.
I guess what set me off was the automatic assumption that the hawk somehow deserved saving from the snake. This entailed and I quote "stomping" the snake. One has to assume this lead to the snake's death or severe injury. The article mentions that the hawk most likely went after the snake as prey and in turn became prey itself.
I understand this man's concern for wild creatures but this wasn't a creature caught in a trap or otherwise unnaturally at risk. This was nature at it's most basic....predator vs prey....one life given so another life goes on. Why would anyone interfere? Why would somone decide a hawk is somehow worth more than a snake? I'm sure this man received congratulations for his "heroic" act....I wonder if anyone gave a thought to the snake.
Whether or not I like snakes or hawks or deer or wolves or any other creature of the wild, for me personally, it's awfully high handed and presumptious to interfere in the balance of nature in this manner. I'm sorry this gentleman felt it his right to do so.
Sad really.....

Re: One is worth more than the other?
I can see maybe helping the bird, cause it's not like a 3 foot snake is gonna eat it, but I don't see the need to stomp some poor snake. I doubt he would have helped the poor snake if the hawk had gotten the better it. Yeah that seems like REAL newsworthy stuff there. *massive amounts of sarcasm* I better stop now before I work myself into a tizzy. Grrrr. Poor snake.

Re: One is worth more than the other?
Don't think I don't feel for the hawk. I love birds of prey as much as anything else in the wild. The way I look at it though if a bird of prey (or any predator) makes mistakes and survives, it's a smarter, better predator. If it doesn't survive, then the smarter, better predators of it's kind will be the ones to go on to breed and produce the next generation.
Mother Nature's got it all figured out. Too bad us humans are often too slow to honor that.

Gee thank you, what a nice compliment! (errr do I get a crown or something? I'd like a crown, it would go ever so nice with my bibbed jean shorts for when I go to WalMart! )
Maybe I will make that my next signature quote

It's so frustrating, too. People forget that we're just another species of animal in the world. If another species was doing to Mother Earth what humans are doing, humans would be the first ones out eradicating them. Take a step back and look at the big picture, folks.

When you log into the forum Robin, before you got into the forums area, the main page it's the area on the left (scroll down a bit to see it) with links to different articles in the news that involve snakes/reptiles. Very interesting stuff!
