    Strange Feeding Behaviour

Last night we were feeding Baby and Punkin. The mouse supply this week from the local pet store was not great, mostly very small barely adult size but a couple of good sized ones. Baby got one of the big ones and was happy and done for the week (she's in shed).

Punkin took her first big mouse perfect. We opened her tub again to offer #2 and she literally came out of the tub in full extension seeking the next one. She must have smelled it as Mike was well back from the tub with her mice while I opened it. She very quickly took #2!!! Well because the mice were so puney Mike had pre-killed two at once so there was one more still left. It had been dead maybe 10 minutes tops. Since Punkin likes 2 big mice we were figuring she'd want 3 this week due to the small size of #2.

When we offered #3 she did the wierdest thing. She approached and instead of striking it, she totally sniffed it all over it's face, tongue flicking and almost gently nudging it. Mike wiggled it a bit and all that. Instead of striking it Punkin just opened her mouth and took the lil mouse right off the hemostats, gentle as could be. She didn't pull it off the hemostats....she started to eat it right off the hemostats!

Needless to say we were sort of surprised. Could Punkin have sensed it was dead since it was cooler then the other two she'd just consumed? Was the sniffing, tongue flicking and nudging her way of checking for life? It was just the oddest thing I've ever seen the snakes do, but then I've never seen either of them darn near jump out the tub to get to their mice either!

After #3 Punkin did continue to very actively hunt her tub for another few moments but we figured three mice was enough.

I continue to be amazed at this snake. It had never seen more than one mouse per week it's whole life and now it seems you can't fill Punky up LOL.

I'm thinking maybe it's time to move up to rats with Punkin before she eats me outta mouse and home!

    Re: Strange Feeding Behaviour

LOL! I've heard several people say they're snakes don't constrict anymore. I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds pretty normal. Now if she asked you to cut it into piece for you then I would be concerned. It definitely sounds like you could move up to rats if that's easier for you (not to mention cheaper). Maybe just figured she got enough exercise for the night and just cut to the food! Dandylion moves SO fast when it's time to feed her. She does the same thing, coming out of the cage after the food. I've never seen a bp move that quickly. Sounds like feeding time at your house was pretty entertaining last night! Good luck with the switch over to rats!
