i have a dumb question about prob placement

so I have been reading a lot on thermostat and thermometer prob placement. and everyone is suggesting the thermostat be plased directly above the UTH with no barrier other than maybe just the tank. why is that? If I did that with mine it would never get heat to the my BP. right now I have a thermometer and thermostat prob on top of substate is that incorrect?

Yes, incorrect. Whatever your source was for that I'd stop using it.

The tstat probe goes outside the tank so it can not be moved or urinated on. If either of those things happens the tstat will think it needs to ramp up the power to hit the desired temp. This will then make the uth run away hot with a good chance of burning and even killing it.

The substrate over the uth should be no more than 1/4 inch thick.

The thermometer probe can go on top of the substrate or under. BUT, no matter where you put it you need to know the temp of the actual tank floor. A IR temp gun is the best device to figure that out. You always want to know the temp your snake could reach. They will and do move substrate.

ok so right now my floor is 89 on both thermostat and themomitor is that an inccorect reading or is it just an issue of the snake being able to tampet with thermostat

and obviously with the prob being right on top of the uth when I move it the thermostat will have to be a bit higher that desired temp correct?

They are correct reading but an incorrect probe placement.
