    Breeding question..!!

Hey all, just a quick question. Not planning on breeding bps personally but a friend of mine does. We were debating but I'd like to input on here as I'm not an expert lol, would it make more sense to buy a good high end male or good high end female? So e.g. a.piedbald male with a female het pied or a female piedbald with a male het pied? What's your thoughts he seems to buy better females but thought was other way round

You want your male to be higher end than your female, pied male to het pied female, yes, het pied male to pied female is a waste unless this is a multiple genes het pied male.

    Re: Breeding question..!!

Genetically, it makes the most sense to mate a pied to a pied--all babies are pied. And you get the same results from a male pied to a female het pied as you do with a female pied to a male het pied--50% normal-looking het pied and 50% pied.

Economically, you can expect more pied babies by mating a male pied to two or more female het pieds than by mating a pied female to one or more het pied males. A male can sire clutches with more than one female, while a female has only one clutch per year, no matter how many males she mates with. Male pied x 2 female het pieds produce two clutches, each of which is expected to produce 50% pied and 50% normal-looming het pied. That's where the benefit of using a pied male appears.

You always want to "plus" the female.
The only time you would want to downgrade a female would be either trying to prove out an animal you produced or working on something like double hets.
