I am probably purchasing a third snake next month. While, I have just about decided on a male firefly. I am open to suggestions. Here are the requirements.
per parents it must stay under six feet
I would like it to fit in a twenty gallon for the first year
    and eat 1-3 mice reliably
    Thank you for your help.

If this is your third snake, second ball python, maybe you should consider investing in a rack. The space savings in comparison to tanks is immense, things are easier to take care of, and it give you the opportunity to convince your parents to let you fill the rack with snakes.

You were there up until you got to eating reliably. Balls will eat when they want to eat not when you want them to and it fluctuates per animal. I have animals that eat every week and others that will fast anywhere from 2 to 6 months. Others eat every two weeks and just about any variation you can think of.

Fireflys are very pretty, one of my favorite bps. Another awesome snake is a brooks king snake.I loved mine, he was a great eater. A twenty gallon will be fine for a few years unless he ends up a monster. Not much heat required and very reliable eaters. Straight up gorgeous in my book, I love the black and yellow contrast on the normals. I kick myself repeatedly for selling mine..

I know Brooks king snake is considered a Florida kingsnake now, but they were called brooksi kings when I bought mine. BHB has some very nice ones.

Brooks King is a nice one!

How about an Irian Jaya Carpet Python? I think everyone's third snake should be a Carpet.

Either stick with the firefly, or you could see about a hognose. I'm thinking about getting one myself soon.

I like the hognose idea too. I'm "snakesitting" one now that I think the owner may tell me to keep. If not, I will be adding one soon after giving this one back.

I also highly recommend a King. My Cali King is an absolutely awesome snake. And a garbage disposal. He has never refused a meal and eats all the BP refusals. My favorite snake I've ever owned and hands down my girlfriend's favorite snake. She used to be afraid of snakes, but loves Django the Cali King.

Those brooks king are really pretty. I just started breed mice for Her Royal Hissness and i'm concerned about being over run if both balls go on a hunger strike. However, I really like her personality.
