Question for goldfish people

I don't know if anyone would know. But at the store I work at I've noticed that when we get bait deliveries, we will get some goldfish that are mirror or leather scale pattern. I'm having trouble finding much information about these scale patterns. One of ur last batches we got had about 12 of these scale patterns. I'm trying to find if they are worth saving from becoming bait. this picture isn't one of the specimen that we've had in, but they look identical. And some having almost no scales.

Thanks for any information anyone can share on these. These are just too beautiful of fish to see used as trot line bait.

I've seen some Mirror carp that looked exactly like the one you've shown ...

Pretty sure the number of 'big' scales varies quite dramatically from from fish to fish !?!

I've seen the full sized carp like that too. I've even caught one and got it mounted. From the little research I've done on the goldfish, it looks like these guys are pretty rare outside of Australia. Atleast from what I can find.

It could easily be a case of somebody mixing up some eggs / fry at an early stage so a few carp eggs got in with a batch of goldfish eggs ...

If you like goldfish, buy them at the bait price and have some really pretty fish. They are really pretty.

Goldfish themselves as a base species ARE carp, so the color can be anything from bronzy to silver. This looks a crutian carp (Carassius carassius - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carassius) that is the wild type coloration to me. Fins look a little boxy to be a regular goldfish - so it is probably a hybrid with another carp / koi / shubunkin

For more / better help, look at goldfishkeepers forum, they are amazing (but be warned they take their fish-keeping as seriously as we do our snakes, you're likley to get a whold thread on water quality and tank size along with identification! great people though, really helped me with a lot of tank issues over the years)

We got another delivery in with several of these fish. I pulled out 8 of them to keep for myself. Now I've gotta get a fish tank set up.

Very nice. You've got an endless supply of possible purchases. Better get a bigger tank. You're going to need it.

I put them back for now once I looked up how much space they take to be as stress free as possible. So I decided to hold off on getting them until I have a good tank already set up.
