upright hide
Don't really know where to put this, so I'll start it out here.
I am somewhat of a 'Don't throw that out' freak. Being the son of two depression era parents though it kind of gets drilled into you. Always looking at how something that might be trash could be used. Well, working at a public utility electric generating plant, I see more waste here sometimes than I can stand!! That said, I came up with a pretty good (I think) use for the spools wire and cable come on. I am talking about the smaller ones, not the coffee table size ones you see by the road as they string new electric or cable lines. Take it apart. Cutoff the majority of the circle of wood on the ends. The one I got today had a groove in it where the tube goes, so I left ~3/4" around the top one, and ~1 1/2" on the bottom one to give it a larger base for stability. Now take the top piece and enlarge the hole to fit you particular snake, and put it all back together. Stand it on end, and you have a top access hide your snake can crawl down into. Admittedly, there is no getting him out without diassembling it, but we shouldn't be bothering them when they aren't out anyway, now should we. If anyone is interested in pics let me know, and I will try and get some up. I don't even know if he will like it yet or not my self. Just made it at lunch time, and I am still at work!

Re: upright hide
I think it's always a great idea to reuse as much stuff as possible. I hate throwing things out, and I would love to see a pic of what you are describing. I think the not being able to get the snake out might be an issue, but it's still a great idea.
(oh and I moved this thread to general herp)
