I would say it was a tick. I dont know what to do about ticks but there is anti-mite spray you can get at a pet store.

Mites are TINY, so you're definitely dealing with a tick. Much easier to get rid of than mites. I usually just pull them off, making sure to get the mouthparts, but there may be a better way, so I'd wait for another reply before doing anything.

Re: tick or mite, which was it.
well i have been in contact with 3 vets today. i have an appointment monday at 12 noon for my bp to get checked out. i couldnt find any mite or tick remover in our pathetic city of fredericton and the vets couldnt give me anything untill they see the snake because it would be a prascription. however one vet gave me a free visit/ checkup for monday after telling her that i had a cat and dog. they must want my business. so for now, i have removed everything except the water dish, 2 hides and i placed a white towel for a substrate. that way it will be easy to find any other mites or ticks. i am going to wash everything in warm soapy water with a 10% bleach for now untill i get to the vet on monday. i guess this is the best i can do untill monday. if anybody has any other ideas, let me know. thansk for the info

I have to agree with the pull the tick off thing. Use tweesers and grab him as close to his head as you can. I have read in several diferent places that after removal. You can put neosporin on the wound and it will help it heal just like it helps us humans heal.
Good Luck

We always used (Boy Scouts...so long ago ) to use alcohol (rubbing). Just cover the tick with a bit of rubbing alcohol and it will let go then grab it with tweezers and dispose of it. This way you don't have to worry about the head staying in the body.

Re: tick or mite, which was it.
If you smother the tick with vaseline (I'm talking a huge glob) ... it will back out in order to try and breathe ... that way you have ZERO worry of any of the head getting stuck my "tweezing" them.
Or, you could just treat your cage with Provent -a- mite and the next morning the ticks will be dead.

snake mite eggs are on a 3-4 week cycle .... you won't really know if it worked for another month.
Good luck.
