Issues securing my tank. Need help!

Hello all!

I am a new BP owner of a 4-6 month male. I have him in a 10 gallon aquarium (I know most people recommend tubs but my husbandry is all in line and he's happy and eating) but am having issues securing the screen top. I have temporarily used large college textbooks to weigh it down but I bought some Petco screen clips to secure it.

The issue with these clips is they don't seem to secure the top at all as if they're too large for my tank. They come in two separate pieces with one that slides under the frame of the tank and another that hooks under the lip of that bracket and then over the screen top. However, it doesn't clip securely and has way too much wiggle room to be secure. The screen top also doesn't have much of a lip to hook over.

I hope I explained this issue clearly enough for it to be understood. Not sure what to do but I know I want something much more secure than using textbooks. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

The screen clips are all but useless. Even when they initially hold the top on securely they will eventually wear out and will end up flying across the room when your snake lifts up on the lid from underneath.

Your snake will outgrow a 10-gallon tank in a few months so start saving up for a proper reptile enclosure. In the meantime you can use nylon luggage straps to secure the screen top.

I have a tank like that. What I did was to place a sheet of tempered glass on top of the screen top, There is some space to allow air in and out.
A glass top is not necessary, but it helps keep the humidity level stable.

Then I got some nylon luggage straps/ tie downs. I fitted those around the tank, but if you do this, be careful to avoid place them across the UTH and away from any lighting that could catch fire.

I think when dealing with balls, using several locks is a good idea.


I found tank clips that work with my tank, fit properly and don't fly across the room when I set them. I use six of them on my tank. Yes they are sold two in a package, but I want that lid to stay on.

They are also nylon, so be careful not to cross them on top of any heat or light source.

You could probably use metal cables too.

Other people will have some better ideas.

You could probably fashion some tie downs out of leather belts. Can buy these at any thrift shop for cheap. Use caution if punching new holes in the leather. Its easy for the awl to slip; had a friend almost take out his eye because he was holding the awl and the belt at an unsafe angle.
