RHP probe placement

I was just wandering if this is a good position for an rhp? I tried under the cage and that damn thing just gets wayyyy too hot. So here is what I have ATM, if it's good then that will be awesome!

I just let it hang so the probe ends up halfway between the floor and ceiling under the RHP. Set the thermostat in the low-mid 80's to start, and adjust up or down as needed so the floor is the desired temperature.

That will reach the temperature you set it to before it has time to heat anything.

I have mine on top of substrate and I let it go up 90 degrees. The top of my hide get about 92 and the cool side hangs at about 80 like that. However depending on your cage type, setup and size it may vary.

Well I can always run it a little higher. But I feel like putting it that far down, the plate will heat up too hot. It gets super hot unless I put it on it like that. I just need to use the infrared therm and see what the floor feels like and just keep moving it up until it's right. It's a 4x2x2 ap cage

I keep the whole room at like 80-82 so I'm not too worried about it getting too much heat going.

Remember RHP heats things not ambient. Higher ambient temperature is just a byproduct. With my setup, if I brought the ambient temperature of my house to 80-82. My substrate surface still wont get hotter than 90 because that where the probe is, but both ambient temperature shoot up and the cool side's surface temp goes to 85-87 and the ambient to almost 90.

RHP are badass you just have to play with them to get the settings that work for you. Just remember hat balls really benefit from belly heat so you want to get that surface temperature where it should be.

I recently made the change myself to an RHP. the consensus seems to be what bcr229said, let it hang.

Well I will try it like this, and if it doesn't work 100% like I need it to, I will drop it from where it is and let it hang down some. Meanwhile, they are happy, here's the occupants!

I forgot to say lol, the hog island is in the cage with the rhp and the dumerils is in a cage with flexwatt belly heat.

Honestly if you keep the room at 80-82, I would go flexwatt and skip the RHP. I too keep my room my around 78-80 and just use flexwatt. Works awesome.

Problem I found with RHP in warm rooms is in order to get it to create a hot spot, you end up overheating the whole cage. They work great in cold rooms as you just set the probe on the cool side and set it to 80F. In warmer rooms, I found the best set up is like bcr229 does and just hang the probe on the RHP side just high enough where the snake cant sit on it and dial it in from there with an IR gun.
