Would like to say hello from NY. New to the forum but a Old School Python owner. There is so much more information available today with the internet and the fact that we have "forums" now that im almost positive ive been doning things wrong for 30 years. I got my first Ball Python when I was about 13yrs old. Back then they were wild caught with ticks, scars and all. After several 4'-5' adults I raised a couple hatchlings. In the early 90's I started raising Burmese Pythons and when my last ones got to 13+ feet they went to the zoo here in upstate NY.
Now that ive given some background and admit to the fact that I now know there are much better ways to keep these snakes I want to get on to some learning. Ive read about every book there is and over the last decade read forums but I never specifically hear opinions on the use of UTH alone or if it should be combined with a ambient heating sorce in order to raise Ball Pythons correctly. Currently I use 55gal and 33gal long Terrariums. They are 48" long and I have 1/3 of the tank floor heated at 92 with 16"x 12" UTH mats. In the past i have used Heat lamps also. Ive never used a CHE.
I have thermometers that use probes so I measure both ends of the tank and obviously the cool end that has no heat sorce is cooler (72-74) than what is normal living temps for pythons. The heat mat has a 12"x 8"x10" cave that stays at 89°. In the 1980's and into the 90's most Hobbiests used those terrible Heat Rocks that burned the snakes, atleast the mats with thermostats are safe for the snakes.
So back to UTH...do you think this can be used alone or was I just lucky using it for 20 years and not having health problems?
Also any other advice much apreciated. I have 2 Albino's that I like healthy, and secure. Thanks guys.
