Kitty Passed
I got up this moring to the bad smell a burst rat belly. Oh crap, right, well it was much worse. I opened Kitty's feeding box to find him dead. He had not eaten the rat and had expired sometime during the morning. I don't know why. he was fine yesterday, and was headed for a shed, so I wanted to feed him before that. I fed him his usual way. He was only about 3.5 years old and had no health problems to speak of to this point. I checked the temps in the box and they were usual. What could have happened? Today has sucked. I couldn't take him to the vet, it being the 4th, so I have had to bury him without any answers. Please help. This sucks enough just that is happend, it sucks much worse becuase I don't know why.

Re: Kitty Passed
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. It's always terrible to lose a pet. If you haven't already buried him you could always refrigerate him and take him to the vet tomorrow. (just a thought) I don't know what could cause such a sudden death, but hopefully someone else might have some ideas.

Re: Kitty Passed
Sorry to hear about your loss. Was the rat alive or dead before being placed with your snake?

Re: Kitty Passed
I'm so sorry. I take it there was no way you could get the use of the freezer until you could have gotten it to the vet for a necropsy?

Re: Kitty Passed
My sympathies in your time of loss. We know he was special to you.
Actually, when you would like a necropsy performed to determine cause of death, the refrigerator is where anything should be put. Freezing causes tissues to die, sometimes too much to even determine anything. It's best to place them in the refrigerator just in case.

the rat was a F/T. i still don't get it. I couldn't put him int the fridge as I lef the country 3 days later and my vet was out of town. Now I am ahving the terrible debate of if I should get an other one. I am kind of afraid to, since I don't know why this one died. I am afrid it was something I did.

Re: Kitty Passed
Don't let one bad luck experience turn you away. I would just clean everything up, and look for a good breeder to get your next BP (or other snake) from.
But, I know it is frustrating. My BP died last year, and the next day my chameleon died, but I didn't let that stop me. Now I have 8 healthy snakes (one sick one though, working on her!)
