Heat mat suggestions

Hi guys,

Since I've had my BP I've always had a heat bulb during the day, during the night the house I had before never dropped low enough to warrant having something to bump the temp up at night. However, I have moved house and at night time the same cannot be said about this house (can't warrant having the heating on in the whole house all night lol). I need to get a heat mat and a thermostat and was wondering what people suggested about using heat mats and the best way to use them to make sure she doesn't get burnt at all. Also what type of mat is good for a 30 gallon vivarium, how much floor space should it cover etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

The mat should cover about 1/3 of the enclosure, so you can find the dinension yourself that works. I get the ultratherm heat pads off reptilebasics.com... they still need a thermostat, despite saying they don't need one in the description. They do get over 120 degress easily.

If it's plugged into a good thermostat, your snake won't get burned. Most reliable thermostat in the hobby is herpstats. The herpstat 1 basic works fine, and they're having a sale right now too.

A reptile heatmat that covers approximately 1/3 of the enclosure with a decent wattage. If money's tight plug into a pulse proportional thermostat by habistat. Heatmats only feel warm to us by the touch because are body temps are high. but they csn and will easily overheat, also cover the heatmat appropriately.. I put two sheets of newspaper over mine then a half inch layer of aspen or beech chips, or repti bark.. the newspaper is just in case the bp burrows down don't want direct contact with the mat. Hope this helps

Your heat mat should never be inside the enclosure, I'm getting from your post. It should be underneath the enclosure, with the probe sandwiched between the heat mat and the bottom of the enclosure. You don't need to cover the heat mat at all.

I keep the substrate very thin so that the hot spot is more accurate to monitor while still being in a safe temp range against the bottom of the tank.

I use vivariums with white python ceramics on a prime thermostat and I use heatmats switched on for two days after I feed my bps to help with digestion.. But they are inside the viv as a heatmat would never penetrate for a inch thick of wood.. & I always cover my heatmats personal preference, but yeah in a glass tank or tub then definitely outside..
