10g or 20 long for 71g BP less than 2ft?

I currently have him in a tub that I'm thinking is too big even though I've added extra hides and clutter for him to make him feel more secure. He's active and moving around but I'm wondering if he would be better in something like a 10g or 20 long instead of the 41qt tub he's in currently. He's 71g and about 1.5 feet but I haven't been able to get a true measurement since he won't stretch out fully for me.

If you think he is having trouble feeling secure in a 41qt tub, I'd ditch the idea of tanks for now and move him into a 15qt tub instead, or even a 6qt. If he's having trouble, a tank will only make it worse.

71g is hatchling size, and it's the easiest to make them feel secure in these small tubs.

Thanks for the replies. The biggest thing I think I keep forgetting to take into account is that they don't need a lot of space and would rather feel secure but not in something too small for their size. With that being said, is it better to go with the 6qt just to be on the safe side?

At that size that is what I would do than at 150 grams I would move to a 15 quarts tub.

Thanks Deborah! I wish I had seen your sticky sooner but I wasn't expecting to walk out of the show with a new pastel. Pit stop at Walmart to grab him a new hide from the garden section.

I forgot how small the 6qt is and was thinking it would be too small but I'm following Deborah's advice and will have him in it tomorrow.

I actually have several hatchling size BPs in a 70 series size tub with no hides or decorations, it's a giant tub for such a little snake. I have Reptichip on the bottom and I put the snake all the way in the back of the tub. The tubs are grey and I dig out a little hole in the Reptichip in the back for the snake, they are perfectly happy back there in the dark dug into the Reptichip substrate. I think as long as the tub or container is dark so light can't get through he would be OK no matter what size it is, assuming it's in a tub like configuration. As soon as you get semi-transparent or clear like glass you basically don't have an enclosure at all. Then you need a hide, and basically the hide is your enclosure.
