converting home t stat 4 your herp cage.

kind of curious to know if it would be pissible to convert or use a digital thermostat that you use in a home, and use it for your herp cage. its gotta be possible for someone who has knowledge about electrical wiring.

well i can buy a digital thermostate for a home at walmart for 30$. just trying to save a few dollars, and if its possible why not. the only draw back is that i will need to keep the tstat in the tank where as a tstat made for reptiles have probes.

IMO...you are just asking for trouble trying to convert a home tstat for asking for trouble. If you spend the $30 for the household digital thermostat you will also have to buy something to supply it power and you will not be able have the probe option. For an additional $35-40 you could get one that is ready to go and will work properly. in my experience being 'cheap' just ends up costing more money down the road.

you can do this, i have my herp room on a household digital tstat. you need the thermostat, a transformer to convert 120v to 24v, a relay or contactor to control the heat source. all in all around 50 bucks worth of parts total. you can get a ranco or johnsons control tstat already wired up for a little more than that. the only reason i did mine was because the parts were free and so was the labor ( i do hvac work)
