Got My Brazilian Rainbow
[IMG] [/IMG]
I've been looking for some time for a Brazilian Rainbow and almost bought one at a show here, last fall (but thought too long and missed out). I was having our cottage stove serviced a couple of weeks ago (cleaning, etc) and showed the guys some bear tracks that my wife and I had seen on our mountain bike ride. I flipped past the pics and the next on my phone was of my Jungle Carpet. The young guy brought out his phone and showed me pics of his snakes, monitor, water dragon, gecko, iguana, and a bunch of other reptiles (had a frigging reptile zoo). But there were pictures of two Rainbows, a brother and sister - beautiful snakes. He said that he was interested in selling the male. We made a deal and I picked him up today (he shed last night and looks fantastic). He was not properly cared for by the guy that the seller had got him from - poorly fed, not handled and not taken care of. The seller handled the snake with a big, leather glove on his hand and his girlfriend didn't like to try to take him out. I didn't have any problems but I won't take any chances until he gets accustomed to me and his new surroundings. I did get him out of his carrying case (in the pic) and into his new enclosure with no issues. So excited and I think that I will stop at the four that I have as they keep me busy enough (and I'm retired!).

I've heard that if Brazilian Rainbows dry out and don't have humidity or water they can die within a couple days! Not sure if that's true or not, I've never had one. I've heard they are pretty tough to keep if you can't keep the humidity high. Sure is beautiful!

Re: Got My Brazilian Rainbow
This guy had been cared for by the guy I bought from but really needs handling which I love to do. I worked hard with my Carpet to get her tp calm down and plan to do the same with this guy. He appears and acts healthy but seems a bit small - not going to rush anything but plan to get him on a good feeding schedule of the proper size rats (don't think that he has eaten frozen/thawed but I'm not worried as I'll convert him! In this part of Canada, right now, humidity is high and all of my enclosures are a bit on the humid side so we should be good on that side of things.

Yes they can get sick quickly if not kept humid. Babies need to be at 90% or higher, juveniles at 80% or higher, adults at 75% or higher.
Enjoy your new BRB!

Re: Got My Brazilian Rainbow
He's been a great snake so far - no problem to handle and seems to like chilling with me. Gave him his first rat last night (frozen/thawed) and no problems there. He is about a year old and a bit over three feet in length but haven't weighed him yet as I can't find anything that he will fit in (and stay in) to put on the scales. Should I be feeding every seven days or so?
