There are different ways to do this. Find what works best for you.

We use Jumpstart thermostats for our AP T8s with proheat panels. The probe is super thin, so a tiny bit of drilling to one of the rear slots allows for probe placement. We have ours on the cool side set to 80.

I use a Herpstat thermostat with the probe centered with the RHP but at ground level. You'll want to play around with what temp setting you use since this is not the hot spot. I used a temp gun to figure out what the hottest temperature was. Took a couple days to get it right.

A thermostat with proportional temp control is preferred, otherwise you'll run the risk of creating some very hot areas under the RHP. Something like the Jumpstart has a 2°F swing on it. So if you have it set to 80°, it basically turns the RHP off until it cools to 78° and then will turn the RHP full blast until it gets back to 80°. I think you'll definitely see temps in excess of 100° below the RHP if you do this.

I re-read this and see you ordered a Pro-Products RHP.

What did Bob tell you as far as placement? Usually he will have a list of questions for you and then advise on the best placement based on what cage brand you have, size of the cage, species of snake, room temp in the room the cage will be, and other factors.

If that was not conveyed to you during your purchase order, I suggest you call them back and then follow the advice you are given.

The post I linked shows one of my earlier cages with a Pro-Products RHP.

I followed the advice I was given and it has worked for all of my cages with absolutely no issues.

In all 3 of these cages, the panel is on the left side, and the thermostat probe is on the far right dangling at floor level.

I think regardless of where you put the thermostat probe, you want to take temperature readings to ensure your hot spot does not exceed an appropriate temperature for your animal.

I hang my stat probes about half way down the height of the cage just barely behind the hot spot. I feed the probe through the hole for the power cord that AP will cut for you if you have them install the panels.

I set them at 87* and get hot spots on the floor at 90* since it's reading the air temp maybe a quarter inch behind the panel

I talked with Bob, a good guy. He did say most people like putting them on the cool side set to 80. He also reconvened the jump start, which I have, but I also have a herpstat. He said use the jump start as its ul listed One other question I have is how hot do the panels themselves get. I am a bit worried about the snake touching it.

I use Pro Products PH3 65 watt on my Constrictor NW cage and do the same as others say. I put the Herpstat probe about 2" off the floor of the cage on the cool side and set it to 80F. On all my AP cages though, I run flexwatt with Herpstats but I also keep the room around 75F so it works good. You don't have to worry about the snake touching the RHP. I had my big boa in there for years and she used to touch it all the time and was fine. They cant lay on it so its fine. I personally prefer flexwatt with my set ups as I find it easier for me to keep the cage around 80F while keeping a constant 86F to 90F hot spot depending on each snake as they all seem to like a different temp hot spot lol.

They have the ability to get very hot, but they usually don't get too much over 105F to 110F before the enclosure is up to temp and they kick off. I have these panels in 7 of my enclosures and have never had an issue with my snakes.

According to Bob, even if the thermostat fails in the "on" position, these panels are designed to never get hot enough to hurt the snake. I can't personally verify this statement, and hope that I never do, but Bob has done a boat load of research and testing and I'm inclined to believe him.

Adding flexwatt is a preference thing. Its nice to have a constant gradient when the panel is not on. Personally, I avoid heat tape like the plague. Not because it doesn't work, but because I've seen too many devastating fires within the reptile community caused by heat tape. However, if used properly, given ventilation, and replaced every couple of years, there shouldn't be a problem. The same thing can be said about under tank heating pads.
