what temp do burns occur

just a simple question. how hot would say the glass in your tank have to get before it could burn a BP? if its hot enough that it feals hot on your skin, is that far beyond the point were it would burn a BP if it happened to be up against it? my basking area is at about 94 F but when i place my probe on the inside of the glass it is reading about 110 F.

That depends on where you place the probe. I wouldn't consider this gospel, but here's my logic... If you touch something and it feels warm, it's probably in the mid to upper 90's since our core temperature is supposed to be 98.6, however our extremities are probably a bit cooler. So taking that into account, I would say mid to uppper 90's. Make sense?

I would get an Acurite digital thermometer/hygrometer and place the probe on the snakes basking spot. A temp gun will also be a good investment. If your snake likes to bury itself in the substrate, I would certainly be sure that he/she can not come in contact with the glass since at 110 deg, I'm pretty sure it would get burned. Try placing a few layers of paper towels down underneath the substrate or maybe some of that repti-carpet, this way your ball can't come in direct contact. Hope that helps a bit.

Definitely set up some sort of barrier between your substrate and the glass if it's getting up to 110. Better safe than sorry when it comes to burns on your snake, right?

sorry i should have been more clear. the glass under my sustrate is fine. the problem is with my infrared light that i have placed on the side. its the side wall/glass that is getting hot. i just purchased a regular household dimmer and rigged it up so i could dim the light. i think this may help. would a safe area for the glass temperature be around 100F? probably if i want to have my basking area at 94F the glass may reach the 100F mark. any thoughts?
