You don't really want to put flexwatt on wood. If your therm fails, there could be issues. I have mine on glass and it works fine. Make sure the under tank space is vented, though. If it is all closed off, the heat could cause problems.
As far as how many cages, I would think you would need a temp probe in each one you are trying to regulate, so that would be one thermostat, one cage. A rack would be a different story, where the whole thing is being heated by the same strip of flexwatt, and the probe being in one of the enclosures in the rack for a represntative temp. Seperate cages would be hard to keep the temps ok in each one due to different conditions in each. I guess if the are all right next to or around each other it might work, just keep a real close eye on the temps till it settles out. Then it would be a matter as to how many watts the therm. can handle.

Ok here is my input..lol The BAH 1000 is a fine thermostat for roach colonies, but thats about it. The relays in that thermostat will stick in the open position eventually. The reason is they have a really small relay. Also the settings on those tstats are analog and very hard to set.

For a little extra cash yo can pick up a johnson controls or a ranco that will not fail.

Doobie- You can put flexwatt on anyting you like, now that being said yo ave to make sure yo uhave a good themrostat that is not going to fail...
