Suggestions for feeding schedule
We bought our BP from a local pet store 3 weeks ago.
We asked how old the snake was and were told that they weren't sure but that they had it for a while and felt it was several months old. We also asked what size rodents it was eating. The employee walked over to a drawer of rats and pulled out one that was slightly larger than a plump adult mouse, and claimed the snake was eating one every week. Now that I have had a couple of successful feedings under my belt, I have serious doubts that they were being honest about the size and frequency of the feedings.
For starters, we finally got our scale early last week and promptly weighed the snake. I was fairly alarmed as the results were 117g. Based on my limited knowledge from referring to growth charts, if our BP was, indeed, 3-4months old, it should be quite a bit heavier, especially if it were closer to 4 months old.
Secondly, the two successful feedings were both adult mice, and after watching those feedings, adult mice seem to be pushing it in terms of size limits for the snake. I cannot see how a snake so small could chug back a rat that is noticeably larger than the adult mice.
Lastly, if this little guy were somehow able to swallow prey that large on a weekly basis, how in the world can it be less than 120g at 3-4 months old?
So now we come to the questions.
Am I correct in thinking that this snake has been horribly underfed? Assuming that it is close to 4 months old, how serious is its current weight of around 120g? Will limited growth/diet at an early age like this possibly lead to future health issues or stunted growth? Should I try to bulk up the snake by increasing the frequency of feedings, or will that also carry the potential of health issues? I'm still new to all of this so I don't know if I'm dealing with a snake that is in a bad state or if I'm just being paranoid.
Thanks for any advice/insight.
Oh, here is a short clip of my little guy/gal. I dunno if those of you with more experience can tell if the snake looks unhealthy just by a video, but I figured I'd include it in my post.
