    Should I get a 'heat fun' instead of a thermometer?

    What all should I get for the temperature/humidity reading? Well.. What do you recommend?

    Get a heat gun to measure the ground temp of your tank and thermometer to check the ambient. Also, don't use the dial hygrometer/thermometer and get a digital. I think a lot of Americans use an Accurite brand for temp and humidity (I'm British so I won't recommend anything I use incase you don't get it over there!) but yeah, get both

    Change "instead of" to "aswell as" and the answer is yes
    Heat guns are not a necessity but they are extremely handy and if you have one will find yourself using it alot!
    A digital thermometer ,IMO, are a necessity and come in very handy for quick glances to check your heating is working properly
