boa vs python - help!

Hi there, been looking around this site and you guys all seem to know your stuff. My husband and I are in a stand off of boa (specifically a red tail) vs a ball python. I would really love to see a list of traits but haven't been so lucky yet. Can you guys tell me what the main differences are between the two? I am looking for max size, temperment, ease of care, and differences in "habitat" (specifically types of heaters for a very large aquarium). Thanks in advance!!

i dont like ball pythons for the simple fact of their feeding habits. when i had balls, they were usually off feed, but my boa has never missed a meal. you have to ask though, what size are you willing to have? male BCIs will average 6-8ft, while females are 7-9. i love boas, their so great. they have a great temperment too. whatever you get, make sure you get it from a breeder, not a petstore.

I dont like BCIs because of their size As far as looks and temperment, they are wonderful animals(can be nippy when young). Actually when I get a bigger place, I will most likely end up with one because I keep getting attached everytime I hold one...but that is with any reptile

As far a ball pythons, the 'bad feeding habits' that you often hear about are usually related to the animals origins, how the animal is being cared for and how it is being fed. I have two ball pythons. Both are easy to handle and feed every time I offer food.

No matter what you choose, be sure to look for snake breeders in the area to ensure that you are getting a CBB (captive born and breed) reptile. IMO...wild caught animals that are sold by most pet stores are just not worth the trouble and you will most likely have problems. If you are looking for a breeder, I am sure we can help you out and give you suggestions on where to get a quality animal.

what part of va are you in? i'm in the richmond area. i know a local guy that breeds balls and boas and has babies now. he could go over the pros and cons of each with you.

I have a couple BPS, and one boa (BCI.) I can tell you that the boa, Apache, has a much faster feeding response and is generally happier when taken out of his cage. Whereas my BPs are either shy or aggressive as individuals, Apache is the funnest snake to hold; he is curious about everything but at the same time, not fast enough to get away if you dont want him to.
The main thing to remember about boas is their potential size; 9 feet is not unrealistic! My friend has a full grown female who topped out at 7.5 feet. You should see and handle a fully grown snake of any type, before buying one.
