    Are tub holes necessary?

I know no holes will increase humidity but will it also increase the tubs ambient temperatures?

Not a lot, and only temporarily. There are better ways to increase ambient temperature than risking suffocation.

    Why temporarily?

It really depends on how tightly your tubs fit. I have one rack where the tubs fit perfectly snug into the rack, and another where there is a good 1/4 inch gap. I have holes on one and not the other.

The lack of holes will slow down air exchange, so it will take a little longer to equalize to the exterior ambient temperature than a tub with lots of ventilation. If you want to raise the ambient temperature in the tub, you need a heat source.

The problem with no holes is that you will have poor airflow which can lead to respiratory issues, good husbandry, routine cleaning and airflow are important.

Is this true even in a rack with about 1/8th-1/4th inch gap? I have no holes in my rack tubs so this worries me

Most commercial racks like ARS and Freedom breeder come with specific ventilation anything from 25% to 50% in some, now if you have good cleaning procedures you could be fine, personally I prefer to have some airflow in my rack, along with a sanitary environment.

Bottom line it's really gonna be a personal call but airflow IMO should be available for any animal being caged.
